SUPERIOR COURT
Only Criminal Jail Cases Will be
Tried at the Next Term
Judge Moses Wright author
izes the News to announce that
at the coming term of the Supe
rior court only criminal jail eas
es will be tried and only such civ
il business which does not require
a jury. In such criminal cases as
stand for trial witnesses are noti
fied to be on hand promptly Mon
day morning, March Sth.
The great inconvenience of
holding court in a hall, together
with the noise of the new build
ing makes it almost? useleiss to at
tempt to do much business.
Judge Wright will adjourn
, 'court to probably July or nug
ust, at which time ,with good
weather, it is hoped that the new
court house will be- complet
ed and all the business passed at
the March term wil 1 be tried.
The Supreme Court has not yet
passed on the Luke Scott case,
but in the event its decision is
handed down and a new trial
is granted this case wdl stand for
trial.
It now appears, besides Luke
4 Scott, only (J. E. Swanson, charg
_ed with perjury, can be tried,
>qidessthe work of the grand jury
result in jailing others.

BOLL WEEVIL TO REACH
GEORGIA IN FOUR YEARS
“'file boll weevil, we believe,
will be in Georgia in four years
in spite of all we can do, and we
arc now working to produce a
variety of eot.t >n that will not.
I •
only resist the black root, preva
lent in many count es in Georgia,
but wil! mature .sufficiently ear
ly to re: .st Ihe ravages of the
boll weevil.”
This is the statement of State
Enlomologisl E. L. Worsham, wh<
nas just made a careful study ol
the reports concerning the prog
ress of the boll weevil across the.
cotton stales.
These ri ports show that this
ravaging insect is traveling to
wards Georgia at the rate of
about G 5 miles a year and is al
ready half way across the state
of Mismssippi. The authorities
who have been studying this in
sect believe th u it will reach
the Alabama line, during the pres
ent. season. It will only take a
short lime I hen for it to cross this
state and enter the cotton fields
ol Georgia.
In order to forestall it, il pos
sible, Professor Worsham is goiiq
to establish experiment fields
near Vienna ami Americus and
plantit with a. variety of cotton
which he hopes will develop sut
ficiently <arly to throw off the
attacks of the boll weevil, which
generally does its damage in the
late summer.
In view of the great number of
cotton mills and oil mills in the
state of Georgia any appreciable
■ curtailment of th< cotton crop
in (his stale would prove disas
trous to the planters.
Within recent years Georgia
lin.s been greatly enriched by the
operation of over 21)0 oil mills,
which arc consuming all of the
cotton seed produced in Georgia,
paying the farmers handsomely
for them, and in turn giving to
the farmers his best, and cheapest
cattle feed and ingredient for
his principal fertilizer.
The various branches of the
department of agriculture arc
keeping n rigid watch to see that
’ no seed from the I oil weevil dis
trict are being shipped into Geor
, gia.
