appeal to the Well-Informed in every
walk of life and are e.-ential to permanent
Bucreas and creditable standing. Ador
ingly, it is not claimed that Syrup of Figs
and Elixir of Senna is the only remedy of
known value, but one of many reasons
why it is the best of personal and family
laxatives is the fact that it cleanses,
sweetens and relieves the internal organs
on which it acts without any debilitating
after effects and without having to increase
the quantity from time to time.
it acts pleasantly and naturally and
truly as a laxative, and its component
parts are known to and approved by
physicians, as it is free from all objection
able substances. To get its beneficial
effects always purchase the genuine
manufactured by the California Fig Syrup

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA.
Editor News: I have been re
'quested by several friends in
Chattooga county to write them
. something about South Georgia.
• But before entering the subject
I wish to say that I would not
I advise any one that has a home
iiu Chattooga to sell without first
I looking..
I have lived in Chattooga 15
■years and am still a citizen of
| that county ami I believe it to
I be one of the best in the state
But there are citizens of North Ga
that have no liomeff that they can
call their own. Land is so high
| in that section that they have but
little hope of ever owning a good
home. It is this class that I
would advise to look at South Ga
with its thousands of acres of
unimproved lands, enough for
each tenant in North Georgia to
have a good home and most of
these lands are cheap. In some
sections the price is advancing.
I caused by the rush from other
sections. 1 have visited several
sections but will only mention a
few, as it would make my letter
too lengthy to go into details. I
was as far south as Ashburn,
Tifton, and Brookfield and these
places are in different counties
and all fine sections. But land
land is not so very cheap in these
sections. Unimproved land $lO.
to sl2 per acre. The cheapest
land I have seen is in Schley Co.
This land is 125 miles southwest
of Milledgeville. These lands are
not as rich as the valleys of
Chattooga county but lies well,
clear of rock, sandy soil, clay
foundation, fine limber (mostly
pine) easy cultivated and very
productive, worth from three to
five dollars, improved five Io
ten dollars. The water in this sec
tion is fine (freestone) climate
mild, and said to be as health
ful as any section in the state.
This land can be bought on easy
terms. Should you become in
terested and desire further in
formation you can get same by
writ ting S. J. Bless, Tazwell, Ga.
He is a reliable man and is inter
ested in getting the county set
settled with good white citizens
Should any one desire to visit
that section they should take the
Central of Ga. to Oglethorpe and
then change to the A. B. & A. to
Flem. Mr. Pless lives about
six miles south of the station.
Respectfully,
L. S. Thacker.
Don't See it in the Paper.
The East Mississippi Times,
Starkville, Miss., furnishes the
following excellent illustration of
the advantage of advertising.
The other day a local merchant
happened to see a farmer receiv
ing some goods at the depot and
noticed that they came from a Chi
cago mail order house. He no
ticed also that the goods were
right in his line t mi the same he
had carried iu his store for years.
He immediately approached the
farmer aud said: “1 could have
sold you every article you have
there for less money than you pait
the Chicago house and save your
freight besides.” "Then why
didn't you say so?”
answered the farmer. ”1 have t a
ken the local paper for years and
have never seen a line about you
selling these goods. This mail or
der house sent advertising mat
ter to me asking for my trade
ami they got it. If you have
any bargains why didn’t you
have them put in the paper so
wo can see what they are?” That ■
tended the argument and the mer- I
chant went to corral other mer
chants who never advertise and
explain to them that the mail
order house was ruling their bus
iness.

State Income $5,570,295
Comptroller General William
A. Wright has completed his re
port for the year 1908, showing
that the income of the state for
that year was $5,388,273.16.
The amount received in 1908
does not show the total resources
of the state for that year for to
it is added the sum of $820,740.-
17, which was brought over from
1907 and which runs the total
amount of funds at the disposal
of the state up to $6,209,013.13.
The total disbursements of the
state for 1908 were $5,570,295.51,
leaving a balance of $638,717.82.
The sources from which the
state derived its largest funds foi
1908 were as follows: General
taxes, $2,863,573.74, hire of con
victs, $380,709.44; near-beer tax,
$19,100; street railways, $65,968.
33; locker club tax, $14,850; li
quor tax, due in 1907 and collect
ed in 1908, $14,788.03.
The report of the comptroller
general shows that the legislative
pay roll for 1908 was the largest
in the history of the state
amounting to $104,932.22. The
report, also shows that the sum
of $405,000 has been paid over
for the maintenance of the state
sanitarium.

BIENNIAL SESSIONS
i
A bill providing biennial ses
[ sions of the legislature will be in
\ troduced in the general assembly
. by Senator W. F. Slater, of the
[ first district, this summer, says
- an Atlanta special. Mr. Slater
i was here several days ago, and
stated that he will soon prepare
■ the measure.
i It will probably provide sev
i enty five day sessions of the
i body, to be held either in the
’ fall or spring of the year. The
- late fall is considered preferable
' by a great many as it would
remove financial inconveniences.
. Taxes are collected at that time
. and the state’s fiscal year begins
on January 1. With the legisla-
■ ture meeting six months before
taxes begin coming in and in
■ the midst of the fiscal year some
confusion was caused.
Endless confusion is possible
because each appropriation bill
■ disposes of the state’s revenues
two and half years in advance.
Another difficulty that would
probably be overcome were the
sessions changed, is that aecom
i panying the election of the Uni-
■ ted States senators. At present
; they have to be appointed for
• three months, as the general as
sembly does not meet until three
J months after each term expires.

No Land So Rich That
Cannot Make It Better d|
You use fertilizers for the profit you get out of them—and the M
better the land the more profitably a good fertilizer can be used on it.
Do not imagine because land will produce a fair crop without
Virginia-Carolina
Fertilizers
that these fertilizers cannot be profitably used on it, or that they were
made only for land too poor to produce without them. IfpoorJ and
will show a normal increase when fertilizer is used, good land will
show at least double the increase. Use Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers
to increase the quality, as well as the quantity of the crop and you
will increase the profits from your land.
