| ADVISES - YOUNG MEN TO
INVEST IN -FARM LANDS.
Comptroller Wright Taljts on Agri
cultural Future of State.
Comptroller General William A.
V. right has great faith in the future
of Georgia agriculturally, and advises
young men with money to invest to
put It In good ’farm lands, rather
than city property.
“This stat.-- is coming into an erea
of prosperity such as it has never
known before," says General Wright.
“State banks everywhere ar.- fairly
bursting with money, and most of it
belongs to the farmers. You can
make inquiry of the small banks all
over Georgia and you will find that
the bulk of their deposits belong to
tillers of th- soil.
"Full realization of the trem-ndous
possibilities of Georgia as a:i agri
cultural state is just now coming to
the people, and I believe we will
issea marked trend back to the farm-,
in the »< xt few years by live, pro
gressive young men. The agricul
tural schools are educating the young
[ men to know how- to farm to the I
[ best results out of the soil and to ap- [
ply business methods to that work
“It has been a great year for this
I Blate. While Texas and other great!
| - otton growing si-itos have fallen off
| tremendously in the crop output this
year, Georgia will produce almost a
i normal crop, and you can see what |
that means to the farmer with th-’
high range of prices, fie is learn- .
Ing to raise corn, wheat, oats and oth
er crops, too. It has been a great
corn year. Lands seemingly worn oit;
have, by fertilization and intelligent i
handling, been made to produce 75 I
to 100 bushels of corn per acre.
Opportunity for Young Men.
Less than a dozen states must pro
duce practically the cotton for the
world. That condition will not change
With the demand for cotton in-reas
Ing the world over, It can be seen
what, the future holds for tho young
man in Georgia. This state is des
tined to become one of tin- great
est agricultural states in the Union
and that means solid and permanent
wealth.
“My advice to young men is to
Invest their surplus money in good
farm lands. Prices must inevitably
go up and up. The demand is in
creasing all the time, ami will In I
crease sin realization of what can be
accomplished dawns upon all the peo
pie. I export. to see within the next [
few years such a development of
such agricultural pursuits as has not
been seen In the history of the state.'
General Wright has been comptrol
lor of the slate for 30 years, and he
had exceptional advantages for ob
serving conditions in the state. As I
tin- state tax official he has watched
and known perfectly the value of farm
and other lands, lie speaks, there- I

MAY USE COTTON SEED OIL
Foreign Sardine Packers Will Use :
Southern Product.
Washington, I). C. —That cotton
K<-‘-d oil may entirely displace olive
oil in the packing of sardines is the
declaration made by John M. Carson,
chief of the bureau of manufacturers.
' The statement will be of great inter
est to the south and cotton seed oil
producers, who within the last few
; years have invested considerable
money in the business and bid fair
j to reap a big reward.
[ Some time ago Cheif Carson ap-1
[pointed J. L. Brodie of Memphis as
special agent of the bureau for the
purpose of going abroad and discuss
ing the subject with foreign trades
j men.
He reports to the department that
! six of the leading firms in Norway -
have decided to try coton seed oil
[in tho packing of sardines. One of
; these firms will shortly- ship to the
United Staes one hundred thousand
cans of sardines in which cotton se-d
i oil will be used. The sardines will
!bo taken by grocers throughout the
I country and placed on sale.
The declaration is made that cot
ton seed oil is the equal of olive oil
and that sardines so packed can’t be
I told from olive products. As cot
j ton seed oil is considerably cheaper
than olive oil Major Carson believes
[as a business proposition there is no
[doubt that it will eventually go far
1 toward displacing olive oil in the
sardine trade.

GEORGIA’S CONVICT

Chairman G. R. Hutchens, of the

the success .of the present Georgia

more apparent, both as a social and
i economic measure, as people are
I waking up to a realization of the
i enormous progress made in the dev 1
opment of good roads since the lease
system was abolished and all the pris
oners put on the public works.
There are about 4,800 felony and
misdemeanor convicts in the state di
vided into about 150 camps, scattered
throughout all the 107 counties, and [
every camp is engaged in the unique j
labor of building and improving Geor- [
gia’s public roads.
Only when reports are made at the '
end of the first year under this new I
| system, which ends next April, will j
[ it be possible to estimate how much |
actual work has been accomplished, [
says Mr. Hutchins, and when those [
reports are made public, he believes ;
the people of Georgia will find that,
their state has made more progress [
in one year in the Improvement of [
public highways than any other state I
in the south.
