CANTON, GA.
L. C. Smith Tells About the Pied
mont Section of Georgia.
Editor News:
I am, if you will allow me space,
going to tell the readers of the News
something about the town of Canton
and the county of Cherokee, often
referred to as the Piedmont section I
of Georgia.
Though I have been here only a
short time and my work has kept
me “close in,” I have had the oppor
tunity of learning something of this
county, its advantages and disadvan
tages, crop yields and what the farm
ers generally are doing in the “Old ■
Red Hills of Georgia.” The boys'
Corn Club contest was held here in
November and some remarkabl
yields were reported. Although only
a small number of boys entered the i
contest in this county, several yields
of more than 100 bushels of corn per
acre were reported. One boy who
lives on Governor Brown’s farm
near Canton, reported a yield of a I
bout 160 bushels. These yields are
considered remarkable by the people
here for many reasons. In the. first
place, the boys got their corn plant
ed late and the land was not as
thoroughly prepared as it might
have been, had the spring been more
seasonable, and then came the wet
season, followed by a long drouth,
which cut the corn crop off 40 or
50 per cent.
From what I have seen of the coun
try here, Chattooga county has much
better farming lands than has Cher
okee, but from careful observation
it seems to me that the farmers over
here; generally speaking, make bet
ter yields of corn and cotton than
does the people of Chattooga, and
they seem to be prosperous. Over
here the country is very hilly and
rough but the land seems to produce
crops equal to the river and creek
bottom lands of Chattooga. I do not
know whether the farmers held their
cotton for a better price or whether
they were waiting for Wilson to be
elected president, but since coming
here 1 have seen more cotton than I
saw before leaving Lyerly. It is
said that the cotton buyers here have
paid the full market price for cotton
all the season and this is considered
one of the best cotton markets in
North Georgia.
Cherokee county is one of the
Georgia Counties that has bad roads.
For this reason there are but few
automobiles in this section, my in
formant telling me that the roads
were too rough to run them over witt
any pleasure. However, Cherokee is
now working her convicts on the
roads and doubtless before many
more years roll by the principal road
of the county will be in good condi
tion.
Canton is one of Georgia’s most
progressive little cities, having a pop
ulation of about 2,500. Among the
manufacturing enterprises located
here is a cotton mill, a fertilizer fac
tory and about thirty marble works,
and companies. It is one of the
busiest places according to size 1|
have ever seen. But, dispite all this, ,
I do not particularly like the place. I
for various reasons. I do n<st know i
whether it seems that way to every ’
stranger that comes here, but to me |
in the morning the sun seems to rise i
in the south and set in the north in
the evening, and it is hard for one I
to get used to the change.
We arrived here on the day follow
ing the national election and found
true democrats very much provoked,
because formerly Cherokee was one
of the strongest democratic counties
in the state, but in this election,
Roosevelt, the Bull Mooser, ran away
with the county, carrying a big ma
jority of the votes. Now, the demo
cratic executive committee of Geor
gia says that a man who bolted the ,
party in this election would not be
eligible to vote in the democratic
elections two years from now; and
what they are to do with these Cher
okee bolters is an unsolved problem. '

-25c Bottle Peroxide for 10c (or more correctly speaking Peroxide of Hydrogen, for that is
the full and proper name). There are various the market, many of which are sold
under special trade names. It is the leading argument of such peroxides that they contain no
preservative. Our Peroxide does contain a preservative and we are proud of it. The preserv
ative in our peroxide is a very small amount of acetanilid which has no more effect on the med
icinal qualities of the peroxide than the ice that you keep in your refrigerator has upon the
butter which it is supposed to preserve and keep from spoiling. Don’t be mislead by wild and
exorbitant statements. Depend upon it —if a thing is not right we do not carry it in stock
much less try to sell it to you.
