Dear Santa:
I’ll take time to write you and
tell you what- I want for Christ
mas. Fill my sock with a dollars
worth of firecrackers and a nut
or two and a stick of candy. That
will be all. Maybe an apple and
an orange. That would fill two

Frtsi? for ThoiidM
By Henry G. Walker, Pastor
Summerville Methodist Church
I have a friend who went to |
see a doctor sometime ago. He
went into the room and spent
three quarters of an hour, and !
came out saying to his wife, “My
what a fine man, what a good
doctor.” They talked of every
thing but his trouble. “Well” said
his wife, “What did he say?” ‘
“Well I don’t remember, but he ;
is a good doctor.” I am afraid we
do that by the preacher some- 1
times. When we leave the church, I
we say, “I enjoyed the sermon,”
but often we forget the cure.
A physician writing somtime
ago, said that because of peoples’ |
attitude, doctors are frequently
forced into quackery. He says
that many times when some big
strapping man comes to him with !
some minor complaint, the doc- j
tor knew all he needed was a
little exercise and he would have
liked to prescribe a wood pile to
saw up. but the doctor knew that
sort of prescription would cause
him to lose his patient, so instead
he always gave the man some
harmless sweetened pills and told
him to go fishing. I fear that
much the same temptation con
fronts the preacher. He has the
choice frequently of telling his
congregation the truth and
creating coolness, or telling them
what they like to hear and losing
their respect. “What Aileth Thee”
do you really want to know?
Some doctors are also surgeons.
Not only can they prescribe for
I illness, but they can also perform
operations. Sometimes an opera
tion is the only thing that will
save the life of a patient. Many
times I have wished that I were
a surgeon and could remove some
peoples’ feelings. Some otherwise
good people are always getting
their “Feelings hurt.” They
spread their feelings out like a
rug for everyone to step on, and
when someone does step “O dear.
I am hurt.” Suppose Jesus’ feel-
ings had been so tender. They
cursed Him, pressed down a
crown of thorns on His brow,
and finally killed Him. Yet the
master never resented an insult,
“operate at once and remove his
feelings.’
