NATIONAL EDITORIAL
Letters to the Editor
Editor, The News:
Since there has been an elec
tion called for Saturday, May
21, to determine whether or
not the people of Summerville
want Sunday movies or Sunday
baseball, I would like to take
this means of letting the voters
of Summerville know just what
we have applied for, and pre
sent to you our side of the ques
tion.
We, in accordance with a bill
passed by the 1949 General As
sembly, have applied for a per
mit to operate our theatre BE
TWEEN THE HOURS OF 1:00
P. M. and 6:00 P. M. on Sunday.
This bill gives the mayor and
council the authority to either
grant or refuse the permit if
the place of showing is inside
the city limits, or gives the same
authority to the Board of Coun
ty Commissioners if such place
of showing is outside any city
limits. Our city government re
spectfully submits the issue to
you for a decision.
It is not our intention, what
soever, to interfere with Church
activities in any way, but to pro
vide clean, wholesome recreation
at a time when there are no
services. That is why we have
asked the mayor and council
for the 1:00 to 6:00 P. M. permti,
and we are now asking the vot
ters for that privilege. We would
like to make it clear that once
the permit has been issued, the
hours must be strictly adhered
to, or be as liable to prosecution
as we would be with no permit
at all.
I think all will agree that we
need some recreational facilities
here. There is absolutely nothing
at all to do during the after
noon, except go to the nearby
theatres, which are now operat
ing on Sunday, or to some place
where there is swimming, golf,
tennis, or just get out and drive
over the crowded highways,
which is much more' dangerous
than sitting in a good comfort
able seat in a theatre and see
ing a good clean, interesting pic
ture show.
To make things more serious,
people, old and young, now are
endangering their lives, seeking
the recreation that they deserve
here at home, hitch-hiking to
nearby places of amusement.
This can be seen not just once
in a while, but every Sunday,
whether rain, shine, sleet or
snow.
If you allow us to present Sun
day movies, we are required by
law to show once each month a
show on either a religious or ed
ucational subject.
Sunday baseball also is in
cluded in this election, and I
have made no mention of that,
not because of any opposition to
it, but because it is entirely a
seasonal form of entertainment
and in about two to four months
would be over. We are for any
form of recreation on Sunday
that is innocent and wholesome
in itself.
On this ballot to be voted on
May 21, the only issue is Sunday
movies and baseball between the
hours of 1:00 and 6:00 P. M. So,
in order that we may have the
same privileges and the same
recreations that our neighbors
have, be sure to go to the polls
Saturday and vote for both Sun
day movies and baseball —be
sure to vote for both, for there
are those who like a good pic
ture show and others who like
to see a good baseball game.
Your vote for these will help
to improve our city, and keep
our people, young and old. at
home on Sunday afternoons.
Let us progress with our nigh
boring towns and cities.
