THE SUMMERVILLE NEWS
AIMS OF V. F. W.
DISCUSSED BY
QUARTERMASTER
James L. Carmichael, of
Swainsboro, the Quartermaster
and Adjutant of the Department
of Georgia, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, was present at the meet
ing of local Post 6688, VFW, in
Summerville on June 2. Mr.
Carmichael was introduced to
the Post by John C. Cavin, of
Trion, Commander of the Seven
the District VFW.
Recalling that it had been one
year since his last visit Mr.
Carmichael congratulated the
Post for its excellent work dur
ing the year, particularly upon
the erection of the Memorial
Home, which, in his opinion, is
one of the best in the entire
state.
“The first aim of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars organization is
to protect the rights of and care
for the Veterans of this county,
whether members of VFW or
not, particularly those disabled
veterans needing help, the
speaker declared, “It is the duty
of the government to care for
these disabled veterans and it
is the duty of the VFW to as
sist them in getting the full ben
efits to which they are entitled.
The Department of Georgia,
VFW, employs a full time Servi
ce Officer who maintains of
fices in the Veterans Admini
stration headquarters in Atlan
ta. Do not hesitate to call on
him for any assistance necessary
in connection with your claim
problems. Also your State Com
mander, C. Flannery Pope, of
Dublin, and members of his
staff, are also always ready to
help in any way whenever you
call upon them.”
“The secondary aim of the
VFW is community service, that
iis Com munity improvements
and activities which benefit the
'entire community. The State
Department VFW conducts a
Community Service Contest each
[year giving awards to the three
Posts in the state with most out
standing projects in community
service. As your efforts this year
were directed to the completion
of your Memorial Home, which
in itself affords possibilities for
greater service to the entire
community, I feel sure in the
years to come you will select a
community service project and
be a winner of one of the state
awards. You have shown you
can do great work.
"The State VFW convention"
Mr. Carmichael said, “is to be in
Brunswick on June 19. 20, 21
and all members who can possi
bly do so. are urged to attend.
This year there will be a pa
rade for the first time in the
■history of the state. This con
vention will mark a most suc
cessful year for the Department
[of Georgia. We are in excellent
condition. Our membership is
some 1500 members over that at
this same time last year.”
Those from the local post
planning to attend the conven
tion are: John Stubbs, James
Abney, Mr. Cavin, Douglas Bak
er,, James (Sloppy) Floyd, Fred
Martin and James Braddy.
Seven new members were ad
mitted at Thursday’s meeting.
They are: John Black Whisn
ant. Vance Story, William M.
White, J. W. Pinion and Bob
.Shropshire.
Mr. Carmichael called special
attention to the fact that the
Poppies sold on the recent Poppy
Day were made by the Disabled
Veterans in Georgia Hospitals
and that these veterans gained
much from being able to con
tribute something toward this
great cause. He stated that the
small reumeration which the
disabled veterans received was
nothing in comparison to the
enjoyment they gained through
making the poppies.
