Protect Your Child
Against Disease Now
Now is the time to plan for
the protection of your child
against diptheria, typhoid,
smallpox, and other communi
cable diseases.
This advice comes from the
director of the state health de
partment, Dr. T. F. Cellers.
"Just before the school year
begins, parents of children of
pre-school age especially, should
be sure they understand that,
while most of these children
may have had immunization
when they were younger, boost
er doses are now in order.”
In the case of diphtheria, Dr.
Sellers said a new condition has
arisen. In Georgia, during the
past 10 years, there have been
an increasing number of cases
of diphtheria among school chil
dren. (Before that the majority
of all cases and deaths from this
disease were among infants and
children of pre-school age.)
“During 1948,” Dr. Sellers ex
plained, "for the first time we
found the number of cases in the
five to 14-year group, exceeded
those in children below the age
of five.”
“Booster doses are the an
swer,” he said.
Dr. Sellers also recommends
booster doses lor smallpox and
typhoid, and whooping cough.
To mothers of young infants,
Dr. Sellers had this to say: “Al
most 75 per cent of all deaths
from whooping cough occur dur
ing the first year of life. Almost
25 per cent during the first three
months. Thus can be seen the
need for early immunization
against the disease.
Infants should also receive
immunization treatment for
diphtheria and teatnus. Diph
theria occurs frequently in in
fants below the age of six
months. Follow’ing these im
munization treatments, one
should be given for smallpox.”
Speaking of tetanus. Dr. Sell
ers said that experience has

BOHANAN’S
I shown that immunization for all
| children, to be followed by a
booster dose in case of an injury,
j proves more effective than wait
ing until there is an injury, and
:then giving the first “shot.”
“Sometimes tetanus develops
following what seems to be a
very trival injury,” Dr. Sellers
said. “Thus we see how impor
tant it may be that the child be
protected against tetanus, before
such an injury occurs.”
All Georgia children should
receive these protective measures
for their health, and you may
| either call your own doctor, or
your health department about
details, Dr. Sellers said.
In some communities, the Par
ent-Teacher organizations con
duct “summer roundups” for
children. You should watch for
the dates, if such round-ups are
held in your community.
If there are none in your lo
cality, and you wish to have
your children receive immuniza
tions from the health depart
ment, you should contact them
any week-day from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from
8:30 to noon. No smallpox vacci
nations will be given until Aug.
7.
However, he warned, if your
child does not feel well, do not
j take him for any “shots” at that
time, but be sure to find out
what his trouble is before you
: ask for immunization treat
| ments.

Here are authoritative answers
i from the Veterans Administra
tion to four questions of interest
' to former servicemen and their
dependents:
Q. My grandchild, whose
father served in World War I, is
living with me instead of with
her widowed mother. May pay
ments of benefits from VA be
made for this child?
A. Yes. Payment may be made
to the legal custodian of the
child if it is not in the custody
of the widow.
Q While in the Army during
World War I, I had to have
some teeth extracted. Am I en
titled to dental treatment by
VA?
A. If there is a record of teeth
extractions while you were in
the service, you may be entitled
to dental treatment. Go to your
nearest Veterans Administration
office for a check on your case.
Q. My husband, a World War
1 veteran, was receiving compen
sation for a service-connected
disability at the time of his
death. I was married to him 11
years and am now 33 years of
age. Will age bar me from re
ceiving compensation as his
widow?
A. Your age has no bearing
on your right to compensation if
you meet eligibility require
ments.
Q. I am a World War I vet

a Masonic Home in the near fu

the resident of such a home af

A. Admission to a Masonic
Home will not affect your pen
