Mrs. Annie Belle Farmer
spent the day in Chattanooga
Friday visiting her son,
Spelmon Farmer Jr., and
family. Mrs. Farmer also visited
Mrs. Ruby Porter and husband
Friday while in Chattanooga.
A speedy return home is
wished for Mrs. Lillion Farmer
who is hospitalized.
A nice Mother’s Day
program was held Sunday at
Oak Hill Baptist Church. Mrs.
Maxine West was in charge.
Mrs. Lillie Mae Farmer and
I. W. Barber of Toledo, Ohio,
were visiting relatives in this
area last week.
Mr. and Mrs. John Henry
Ware and Mrs. Mary Tubbs
were in Summerville Monday.
Mrs. De Lois Williamson,
Mrs. Jessie Lee Williamson, and
Mrs. Spelmon Farmer attended
services in Summerville at the
Second Baptist Church
Sunday. Mrs. Williamson also
attended the Mother’s Day
program at Pleasant Hill
Methodist Church.

Sunday and attended the Lillie
J. Landrum family Mother’s
Day dinner in Gadsden, Ala.
Mrs. Landrum is the oldest
sister of Mrs. Perkins and Mrs.
Farmer’s mother. They also
visited their aunt, Bessie
Dudley, and the Rev. and Mrs.
W. D. Cowser and family while
there.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tubbs
and family were Mother’s Day
guests of Mrs. Tubbs’ mother,
Mrs. Frances Connie in Dalton,
Sunday.
Mrs. Annie Jones and Mrs.
Pennie Mercer visited Mrs.
Laura Favors Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Mc-
Daniel spent the weekend in
Frankfort, Ky., visiting their
children, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney
McDaniel and family. They
also attended the graduation
exercise of Rodney from law
school.

Rural Fire Groups
A one-day Georgia fire
equipment show and demon
stration will be held at Luther
Williams Ball Park, Macon, May
26, announced Ray Shirley,
director, Georgia Forestry
Commission.
The program begins at 10
a.m. Jimmy Waters, pastor,
Mable White Baptist Church,
will give the invocation. Macon
Mayor Buckner Melton will
welcome the group. Shirley
will give the purpose of the
program.
Rural fire defense co
operators, including city and
county officials, legislators,
and RFD fire chiefs and their
personnel will be attending the
affair that will feature the dis
play and demonstration of fire
fighting and related equipment
by 30 dealers and manu
facturers. Anyone interested in
the RFD program is invited.
Shirley said the speakers
and their subjects will include

Baker stated that a variety
of items will be on display.
They will include pumpers,
mini pumpers, fire knocker
slip-on-units, breathing appa
ratus, military vehicle equip
ment and parts dealers, and
communications, alerting,
safety and rescue equipment.
Shirley emphasizes that the
show will bring consumer and
supplier together. A constant
effort is being made to improve
rural fire protection through
more efficient equipment. It is
felt that this can best be done
by acquainting the RFD co
operators with the dealers that
provide this type of equip
ment, Shirley added.
Those persons wanting to
attend may obtain a pre-regis
tration form from their local
county forestry unit. The
tickets are $1 each, covering
the cost of the barbecue. If
you register at the gate, the
cost is $2.50.
There are five rural fire de
partments in Chattooga
County. The chiefs and depart
ments are Ronald Stephens,
Lyerly Fire Department, Pierce
Grose, Irion Fire Department;
Robert Hawkins, Cloudland

new group Sunday at Berryton
Bible Mission. The new group
is known as The Singing
Cantrells.
Singing will begin at 2 p.m.

celebrated a birthday anni
versary last Sunday and was
honored with a dinner pre
pared by his wife.
Visitors helping to celebrate
the occasion were Mr. and Mrs.

Ala.; Rev. and Mrs. Robert

Following the large meal the
afternoon was spent in family
visiting and fellowship. During
the day Staples received a
number of gifts in celebration
of his birthday anniversary.

State's Top Speller

Polo Sengupta, a seventh
giader at Hilsman Middle
School in Athens, defeated
stiff competition from nine
other district champions May 4
to win the title of Georgia's
top speller.
Sengupta, the 12 year old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Barun K.
Sengupta of Athens, captured
first place in the annual state
wide spelling bee sponsored by
the Georgia Association of
Educators (GAE) and the
Atlanta Daily World.
In order to get to the state
wide competition, Sengupta
and the other nine district
winners won spelling contests
on the school, county and
district levels. After spelling
such words as quiche,
loquacious and gerontocracy,
Sengupta defeated his compe
tition by correctly spelling
luminaire and then detente.

Mrs. Doster Is Honored
At Retirement Luncheon
Mrs. Winifred Doster was
honored with a retirement
luncheon Friday, April 30, at
the Chattooga County Depart
ment of Family and Children
Services on South Commerce
Street.
Mrs. Doster retired after 12
years of service with the
county department. During
those years, her duties ranged
from certifying eligible people
for commodities to working
with older people in our com
munity. She also provided
transportation for those eligi
ble and coordinated the efforts
of the various service agencies
in the county.
Always concerned about the
elderly in Chattooga County,
Mrs. Doster was primarily

boundaries of their own home.
Mrs. Doster was instru
mental in helping to organize
the Congregate Meals Program
in Chattooga County. That
program offers a nutritious
noonday meal to the older
citizens of our county. On
Thursday, April 29, the
Congregate Meals Program
honored Mrs. Doster by
making her “queen for a day.”
They presented her with a
bouquet of red roses and a
silver relish dish, among other
gifts.
Several guests attended the

luncheon given by the staffs of
the Chattooga County DFACS
and EOA, including A. B. Day
and J. L. Thomas, members of
the Chattooga County DFACS
board; Miss Louise McCollum
! and Mrs. Marion McCain from
Mental Retardation Center;
Mrs. Martha Speer from Parent-
Child Center; Mrs. Jean Pless
from the Chattooga County
Library; Mrs. Pam Echols and
Hughbell Tucker from the
County Extension Office; and
Ty Butler, court service
worker. Several of the agency’s
staff volunteers weft also on
hand to honor Mr.s, Doster,
including Mrs. Minnie Bailey
and Mrs. Emily Futral.
Mrs. Doster was presented
with an engraved silver tray
and two sterling spoons in her
chosen pattern by director
Janeese H. Pullen in
remembrance of all her services
to the people of Chattooga
County. Other gifts from
friends and guests were
received by Mrs. Doster.
