Former Chattoogan
Participates
In Eyesight Mission
Former Chattooga County
resident Dr. Keith Bowen, who
is now an optometrist in
Alliance, Neb., recently
accompanied that state’s first
VOSH (Volunteer Optometric
Services to Humanity) team on
a ten day mission to Honduras.
VOSH is a volunteer organ
ization composed of optome
trists who travel to villages and
rural areas in underdeveloped
countries and set up temporary
•optometric clinics. The
optometrists perform eye
examinations and dispense
used glasses, which have been
collected by service organ
izations, usually Lions Clubs.
The Nebraska VOSH team
joined an Indiana VOSH team
in Belice. The two teams con
sisted of ten optometrists, one
physician, assorted wives,
children and willing workers.
The VOSH team worked in
the rural mountain area in
Honduras, near the El Salvador
border.
Dr Bowen said the poverty
in these areas is almost beyond
description. Without volunteer
missions very few people
would be able to obtain or
afford vision care. He also sug
gested this type of trip to
anyone in the medical or
dental fields.
Dr. Bowen is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Emory Bowen of
Hinsdale, 111. He attended
school in Summerville for
many years.
A great aunt, Mrs. Frances
Dempsey, lives in Menlo.
