The worm sooth wind had coaxed
Tindslcy’s woods Into potting cm their
new spring suit. Brown robins tripped
briskly through tbe springing graen places
ia Stumpy Field. Mickey Finn’s tame
crow act oa the fence cad kept a watchful
eye oa a circling hawk, who had fdoedous
designs on Mrs. Dooton’s tamtams. A
venturesome frog cams out of the mod on
the margin of brown’s pood and tried to
to ring a solo; surprised at the dismal
croak that coma from his throat, he con
cluded that he was not fitted for solo
singing, and went back Into tbe mud to
wait until the chorus began work In June.
Mickey Finn had grown rapidly during
the winter. He was broader shouldered
and deeper cheated, and be began to pot
away chHdish things. A perception ef
the conventions of society waa beginning
to datra upon him. He began to ask
himself whether there was any virtue In
a paper collar. But then there would be
too manifest aa inooogruity between a
paper collar aad a red flannel shirt; and
ao be bridged the difficulty with a dicky.
Out be soon found that elegance was
gained at tho expense of comfort, for the
collar choked him and the dicky kept
slipping around ao that a strip of red
flannel shirt was exposed to view. His
mother, while she began to know that her
boy was weaning away from her, failed to
see that the subtlo alchemy of manhood
was beginning to stir bm pulses, or that a
perception of the dignities of life had un
consciously been appropriated by him.
The development of brawn and muscle
had no significance to her. Mickey would
always be her boy, were he an Ajax in
riao and n Hercules in limb.
But Mr. Finn took a moro practical
view of tbe evolution of little Mike.
"Ye needn’t be ao swintOlmental about
th’ b’y, Biddy,” said Mike, one evening.
"It’s not that he’s thinUn’ less lv ye; but
ye wouldn’t be wantin’ a big lump lv a
Vy Bko him t’ be mauthcring around like
shabby. I’ll lave it t’ yonrsel’ now—
would yet Ah, hat but he’s good fer

dmppin’ Mm cn th* broad iv Ms back as
alsy as you’d be turnin’ a pancake.
Shore he’s good aither way ye take Mm—
collar's elbow, aide bolt, or catch as catch
can.”
Mr. Finn chuckled to himself as ho re
capitulated bis son's virtues, and bis wife
looked out into the gathering twilight
with a brooding premonition that thi
physical accomplishments of her boy
would get Mm into trouble in the days to
come.
Mr. Finn’s chuckles died away when he
saw a man open tbe gate and walk up
the little graveled path to the door. He
recognised the man as Jack .Cooney, to
whom he owed $30 cn the purchase of a
cow.
"Good evenin’ t' ye, Mike, an bow’s
times wid yef” said Jack.
“Well, thin, they might bo betthcr nor
they are. What wid th’ rheumattz and
tho late spring I’m discouraged intoirely.
How’s things wid yerscl', Jack?”
"I’m in a mighty tight place, Mike.
Troth man, I’m nearly out lr mo head

that he wint out, atther l’nvin his black

"Fwhat did ye do wid him, Jack?" said
Mike, leaning over the table to catch the
reply.
‘ ‘Fwhat w’ud any man do as hod two
flats on his arrums and two shoes on Ms

thumped Mm till his face was like a b’af-

"An’ he tuk th’ law on ye, I suppose?"
“Faith ho did that. Ho had me up for
'sanlt and batthery, an* th* jedge lined
me $30 or go to jail for thirty days. Bat
I got out on a ncUy somethin' or other,
on’ 1 hav’ thirty days t’ raise th’ money.
That’s fwhat I’m here for to-night
don’t want to bo pressin’ ye, Mike, but if
ye hav’ the $30 ye’re owin’ mo on th’ cow,
or yo can get it by this day four weeks,
I’U be much in ye’re favor, ao I will, plaze
God.”
Mike nshered Ms visitor to the door
with a sorrowful heart. When he had
closed the door ho asked Ms wife how
much money them was in the stocking.
Mrs. Finn poured tho contents of tbe
iroolcu safe out upon the table. They
counted tbe money over carefully several
times to be sum that no mistake had been

Aswan to have been expected, there was

the discovery of Mickey’s flight was made.
What object he couhl have in going away
was mote than Ms parents could guess.
It seemed like a wanton desertion to Ms
mother, although she hardly believed such
an act possible, espedaUy after Ms affec
tionate manner of the previous evening.
Two weeks had gone by and no tidings
were heard from the missing boy, although
he had mode one trip to Honesdalc, and,
returning to Csoney Island in tho morn

and felt such a big Jump in Ms throat that

effort of her career. Jenny had never
been noted for speed, bat under tho in

Down Newkirk avinuo they came like a

“There come* that daredevil, Mickey

The two watched the male and her rider
until they drew np in front of the Finn

the sheriff was patting a rope around the
horns of the cow. Leaping from tho

“What’s that t’ye, yo spalpeen,”

They went into the shanty, and Mickey

although wo suspected tho members of a

along the street, and I thought I’d get

new pair of shoes on. He got on
to me and popped into a church.
It was Sunday morning, and tho
