Lines written on the death of little
Nell Law head and tenderly inscribed to
her mother:
The days all seem so long
Since Nell has gone.
And oh ! I love to see the twilight
Gently st- aliug o'er tile tired earth,
For well 1 know that in the darkness
Auil the sleep of coming night
I shall forget that Nell has gone !
Friends all seem kind and tender since
My Nell has gone.
They know the mother heart Is longing
For her face and voice, and in their
Tenderness and thought of achiog
Mothpr heart, they love me more
Since Nell has gone I
The early risiug sun, whose kiss
Awakeus all from slumber and
Imparts new life and light into our
Fainting hearts, seems lingering
So lovingly, aroaud my little home,
As if ho knew his beams of tenderness
Are full of sympathy for me
Now Nell has gone.
And dearer, sweeter, better for than
All the love and tenderness that earth
Oau give, my Heavenly Father’s love,
His watchfulness and care is over me
At night and through the day ’tis
Guiding me and keeping me in peace
Now Nell has gone 1
God never chides the anxious
Sometimes wildly beating
Mother heart, but as a tender
Mother comforteth her child, He
Soothes the pain and lifts my aching
Heart nearer the sunlight of
His love, so brightening my daily walk
Since Nell has gone I
So God will help me day by day
To suffer and be strong, and
Brighten e’en the darkest day
With smiles of comfort and of
Peace, and when the twilight of
Life’s long day settles into endless
Night for all that’s earthly and of
Earth for me, my Father, then, will
Take His trusting child to
Nestle in the bosom of His love.
Where night and parting are not
Known, and after while my
Darling Nell will come and meet
Me there and leave me nevermore!
