NOVEL CONTEST ENDED.
The prizes offered the Georgia editors
by the Board of Trade of Quitman for
the best write up of tlie town of Quit-
man and the connty of Brooks, incident
upon the recent convention of the
Weekly Press Association at Quitman,
have been awarded. Some splendid
articles were written, and the Qnitman
Free Press says that the committee had
a serious task in deoiding upon their
comparative merits. Editor John
Dortch, of the Oarnesville Advance, wbb
easily the winner of the first prize, six
Brooks county hams. The contest for
the second prize, a barrel of Brooks
connty syrup, was close Indeed and the
committee found it very difficult to de-
oide, but finally It was awarded to Edi
tor B. I. Thornton, of the Elberton Tri
bune. Editor Pendleton, of the Maoon
Telegraph, although not eligible, threw
in a paragraph which was so pleasing to
the people of Quitman and Brooks oonnty
that they deemed it worthy of speoial
recognition, and one of the best country
hams to be found in Brooks connty was
ordered sent to Editor Pendleton,

EDUCATION IN REACH.
"If the democrats can suooeed in mak
ing anti-monopoly and tariff reform the
principal issues of the pending cam-
pa’gn,” says the Philadelphia Ledger,
•'they will be able to attaok upon the
most vulnerable parts of the republican
lines.” Every republican realizes that
tb's it a foot, but none of them will ad
mit it.
The Louisville Oonrler-Journal says
that the position of Governor Shaw,
Teddy's secretary of the treasury, touch
ing tariff reform, may be summarized as
follows: "When everybody Is In favor
ol.il, and > congress elected without
regard to it, can be relledon to do what
the American Protective League re-
quizes of it, he propose* to oomplete the
Job by spontaneous combustion."
The Savannah Press says Boys and
girls who are really anxions for a col
lege education oan very easily secure
this in Georgia now. There never was
a time when the opportunities were so
fine or when, by the outlay of a Little
money, suoh rare advantages could be
enjoyed.
The Savannah Press has already had
oooasion to allude to the efforts of the
State Normal sohool and the University
at Athens. At the former institution
there are hundreds of young men and
women being trained for the work of
teachers. The expenses of tnitlon are
about $50 a year, less than they are in
most of the private primary schools in
Savannah, while the board is not more
than $-10 a year—less than it is for
mouth at any summer resort. This is
full of suggestions to people in Savan
nah who desire to help along Savannah
girls. By giving one scholarship a Sa
vannah benefactor has the right to name
two. This provision was made by the

arships to the State Normal.
Surely these gifts are liberal and
should set people to thinking. The
Press has already alluded to the good
work of the University Clnb in Savan
nah, which has educated at Athens
half a dozen deserving young men.
This club meets once every three
months, listens to a paper on timely
subjects, goes over the field of applica
tions for aid, and picks out the boy or
boys whom it desires to help for the
year. In April the clnb has an annual
banquet, at which some distinguished
alumnus from abroad is invited to
speak. Here thirty or forty young men,
many of them working for salaries,
gladly contributing to an educational
fund which, in the nature of things,
mnst Increase each year, for these loans
are paid baok with interest, It is in no
sense a charity, for the boy; who are
aided give their notes for the amounts
borrowed and bo the loans keep on in
creasing from year to year and more
aid can be extended each term. It
seems to ns that the older and wealthier
men of Savannah ’should reflect upon
the efforts of the younger men of small
means and find It In their heart to give
scholarships each season to the strug
sling boys and girls who are needing
help.
Tnition at the University Is absolute
ly free. Room rent is free and board at
the nominal rate of $3 a month. A boy
oan go through the State Universi
ty, paying for books and clothes at $200
a year. The late Alexander H. Steph
