THE FIELD AM) FIRESIDE. Marietta, Oet. 9, 1877. Marietta Paper Manufacturing Cos. Manufactures tiie best of News ami Wrapping paper, at lowest prices. S. A Axdkrsox, Agent. The Weekly Field and Fireside. With the last issue, we com uienced the weekly publication of ’* The Field and Fireside ,” and at the _ LOW PRICE OF ONE DOLLAR PER ANN I’M, In Ad vaii ee . Subscribers now on our list will please pay in their subscriptions, and we hope that a thousand oth ers will come forward, and have their names throned for a cheap and highly useful Fape£ The Paper will contain a month ly abstract of all Officers' Sales, and all News, local and general, interesting to its readers. gW* For sale at this office, Waddell's Riourapiiical Sketch of Linton Stephens— to In* had at a reduced price. It is pronounc ed the most readable and instruct ing biography that has appeared since the war. New Hoods. Tin* Fall amt Winter trade is now o pening and promises to afford livelier times to our business men than for sev eral years. Cotton is commanding bet ter prices, with a probability of advanc ing, and tbe crops of tiie farms gener ally have never been more satisfactory. In view of this, our well-known mer chant, Mr. L. S. Nnrtheutf, than whom there is no better judge of goods in Ii is line, and no dealer more reliable, otters a large stock of Dry Goods, Hoots and Shoes, llats, Caps, and Notions, on tbe most moderate terms, as will be seen by his advertisement. Party Organizations. Tin* Republican party lias fulfilled its mission. ('mu posed of 1 lie abolition ele ments of till parties, originally, its ob jects were accomplished in the abolition of slavery and the suppression of the j rebellion. In the former, it was sits- ] rained by the anti-slavery sentiment of < Ibis <'ontinent and Europe; in the lat- i ter, it had the co-operation of all tin* people of the Xorth. Apart from the pretence of providing for the # “wards” of the nation, itsexistancc bad no fur ther object, and it has been passing a way, and will soon become a thing of the past. The Democratic party divided in lStid; rallied, after the war, on its old consti tutional platform declaring the new a mendments “ null and void.” Since that time, as tin organization upon dis tinct principles, it has become demoral ized, having supported Oteelv with tin* amendments, and Tilden with the plat form in approval of them. So that it is jt very easy matter for Mr. Hayes to say to the most ultra Southern democrats “ come, there is no difference between us —let us shake hands.” As Mr. Hayes is now administering the Government, possibly either the Re publican or Democratic party' would make a good enough National In ion party. But the object of such a party cannot he effected as long as there is at taching to either rei'liiDiolimii, or hatred, or sentiments in conflict with the most perfect national unity. How it will do, we do not know. — Whether, after the civil war, we will have that which flay and Webster so earnestly desired before the war, a Na tional Union party, based on the consti tution and free from all sectionalism, or whether we will move on under the present combinations, the development will Soon determine. Capture of two Desperadoes. The capture of the two despe radoes, Shaw and Johnson, who were confined in the Fulton coun ty jail, and who escaped on Fri day night last, reflects great ere dit upon Messrs. A. J.Varner, Z.B. Moon, H. (J. House, T. N. Bui tier, arid 1). C. Matthews, citizens of Cohb county, living near Powder Springs, who captured liieiu in a swamp near Powder Springs.— Shaw was tried and convicted for the murder of his wife, and John son for the murder of a ferryman near Rome, and both aw aiting the execution of their sentence. They made their escape by sawing in two a bar of iron in the floor, and tunneling under the jail. These two men are suspected of being the murderers of a dozen men or more—Johnson of having dyed his hands in tlie blood of six men, including bis own father, and Shaw of having killed seven men besides his own w ife. “We hope the governor,” remarks the Con stitution, “ will reward the gen tlemen who captured them. If they had failed to capture these criminals, it would have been but a short time before these men would have added other crimes to the long list now against them. No reward was offered by the go vernor. hut justice demands that tlie men who made the capture should he properly compensated for their time, trouble and risk.” AIAKI ETTA 71A It k Ill's.
