The Mayoralty Contest. —Un-
der an agreement, the Mayoralty
contest was ended on yesterday,
bv Mr. Reid withdrawing his ap
plication for anew trial, and Mr.
Denmead resigning his claim to
the office under the late election,
and the City Council to order an
other election, which no doubt
was done last night at their regu
lar meeting. This then will open
the field for new candidates: and
cancels all bets on the former e
leotion.
Veto of the Silver Bill.— The i
President has vetoed the Silver!
Bill on the ground t hat it provides I
for the coinage of silver dollars ,
of the weight of 412A grains, to |
be legal tender, at their nominal
value, when it is well known that!
their market value would only be j
from 90 to 92 cents as compared |
with the gold dollar.. He would j
have no objection to the silver
dollar as a legal tender, if made |
of equal commercial value with j
gold.
-
Financial Change. —The Cur
rency Committee has introduced
a bill in Congress to retire the
national hank currency with l r ni- j
ted States treasury notes to be is- j
sued by the Secretary of the
Treasury, iflhisbill passes, bank
credit will rest upon coin ortrea- j
sttry notes instead of bonds, and 1
the latter will doubtless afford the
chief paper circulation of the
country, as they will be legal ten
ders for many purposes, and has j
ed on the credit of the govern !
ment.
There were twenty four gradu- j

It is now conceded by the op

it pushed by legislative enact

R. B. Bullock, who has been a

Senator Gordon is preparing

Canton.
Publishers Field and Fireside.
—Thinking perhaps that, [some of
your numerous readers would
take an interest in the events of
court week at Canton, permit
me to give a few observations
whilst there. Court met on Mon
day, and after aw interesting and
lucid charge to the Grand Jury
by Judge Lester, proceeded to
the disposition of the business on
the crowded docket. Quite a
numbdl 1 of civil cases were tried
and otherwise disposed of on
Monday and Tuesday. On Wed
nesday morning the criminal
docket was called, the now cele
brated John Cruse case being
first in order. You remember"
Cruse was indicted for the rob
bery of Dempsey Springer, a cit
izen of Cherokee County, under
rather atrocious circumstances
and tried and convicted at the
last term of the court, and his
case was carried to the Supreme
Court, and anew trial granted,
which of course remanded the
matter to Cherokee for anew in
vestigation, A great deal of in
terest in the case lias been man
ifested by the citizens from its
inception, but a jury was obtain
ed notwithstanding and the sec
end trial had, which resulted in
a second verdict of guilty. The
prisoner was ably represented by
Judge William Wright of Atlan
ta, both in the examination of the
witnesses and the argument be
fore the Jury. The prosecution
was conducted with vigor and a
bility by Col. J. R. Brown and
T. F. Greer, Solicitor General.—
Court adjourned late Saturday
afternoon to convene again next
Wednesday. Before closing a
communication that should necei
sarily be short I can not retain
from mentioning the J. M. M’Afee
hotel. It is without doubt one of
the best houses in the State, At
lanta included, both in equip
ment and management, and de
servedly has a large patronage.
Mr. M’Aft'ee.the proprietor, is one
of'the most energetic and capa
ble men in North Georgia, and
Mr. Harris, the Clerk, and assist
ant keeper.would take a premium
at the world’s exposition as a
model hotel man. Many new
buildings have been erected in
Canton, and the county generally
is prosperous considering the
times. Pardon me, for trespass
ing so long upon your time and
space; my apology is that I saw
and heard so much that was in
teresting during my stay, that I
cant give it expression with sat
isfaction to myself and justice to
you within proper bounds. I have
left things unmentioned that
would take a half column to do
justice to. fhe Cherokee Geor
gian for instance, one of the
sprightliest weeklies in the conn
try, and its genial editor, Mr. O’
Shields, who is a regular trump
on wheels. The Field and Fire
side will ‘‘weed a wide row” iu
Cherokee before another volume
is completed. Mark the predic
tion. Visitor.
It begins to look as it the VV ays
and Means Committee, or a ma
joritv of it, would vote to amend
the new Tax bill so as to restore
the income tax. The committee
hopes to finish the Tariff bill this
week, though it has not passed
schedules G aud H. covering
sugar, silks, Arc. There have been
THE FIELD AND FIRESIDE.
some changes in the bill, based
on the corrected tables of the
Treasury Department, which are
more favorable to the manufac
turers of raw material, but which
will increase the present revenue
from that class of articles.
Mr. Southard, of Ohio, has
introduced a proposed amend
ment to the Constitution to be
designated article IG. It pro
vides that the executive power
shall he vested and hereafter ad- j
ministered by three Presidents,
constituting a Supreme Exet-Sb ;
live Council of Three to be elec- j
ted by the qualified electors of
each and all of the States and j
each to be taken from one @f the ;
three several prominent sections !
of the United States known as
the Western States, the Eastern
and Middle States, and the South
ern States, and no two of whom
shall be citizens of the same sec
tion or district of the country.
The term of office shall be six
years, and no President having
served a full term"shall lie elig
ible for a second term.
