Tm: news from Turkey continue.- to
Indicate war between England and
.Russia. The < zar is now as aggressive
as before the peace with Turkey, in se
curing the fruits of the conflict, but
apparently anxious to avoid a war with
Austria and England, at least, before
be is ready.
Bihi.ix, March 23. —The North Ger
man Gazette say- that it is evident that
Russia regards war with England as
inevitable, and knows that she was nev
er better able to wage it. than now. V
Russian naval attache here, who is a
leading authority on torpedoes, lias
suddenly been ordered home.
London, March 23.—. V special dis
patch from St. Petersburg says that ru
mors are in circulation that Russia has
demanded that flic British fleet quit the.
sea of Marmora immediately. The cor
respondent has reason to believe that
the-e reports, although exaggerated, are
not entirely unfounded, and that Rus
sia is making, or is about to make, re
presentations in regard to the British
fleet. Minister bayard's opposition to
the embarkation of the Russian troops
at Bnvukdere has caused great irrita
tion.
An inspired article in the Journal de
St. Petersburg attracts much attention.
It points to the continuance of the fleet
in the sea of Marmora in defiance ofin
icrnational law ; asks if it is not time
to ask England what she really wants.
Europe should call England before the
judgment seat and summon her to re
enter the sphere of international law by
quitting the straits and formally en
gaging not to return. Semi-official
hints are given that if England dos not
wish to attend the congress it will
meet without her. In connection with
the foregoing intelligence, it should he
stated that rumors were circulating in
the lobbies of parliament last night,
that the tone in official circles is decid
edly warlike.
London, March 23.—Tim correspon
dent of the Edinburg Scotsman says,
the landing of a force on tlie Asiatic
side of the sea of Marmora unques
tionably been considered by the gov
ernment. Railroad material to be laid
in a parallel line with the 80-phoru

In the seventh, we are to have t'olouel
.Tames JJ. Brow n, it is -aid, as the reg

the independent. How the race will
terminate, no one can tell. Col. Brow n
is a very strong man before the people,
a good organizer, and has a strong hack
ing in tiic district. Dr. Felton, on the
other hand, has the confidence ofthe
people of hi> district. He has made a
good-reputation and been particularly
efficient in many of the issues in which
the people are very much interested.—
The only thing he will have to contend
with is the organised democracy, in
command of an able leader. We may
look for some of the best work of the
campaign in tlie seventh.

History.
Boys, in choosing your course of read
ing, History should he regarded of first
importance. It gives us the facts rela
tive to the existence ol' the different
countries and their settlement, as well
as to th° manner of government, the
character and various religions of the
inhabitant-.
The advantages arising from the stu
dy of this branch of literature may be
■discovered in every enlightened nation,
in the improvement of the laws by
which the people arc governed. The
characteristic features of the first gov
ernment being cruelty and injustice;
and these forms were perpetually sub
ject to the capricious will of (he popu
lace, or that of a tyrant, who, it may
be said, ruled the law- instead of being
subservient to them.
Regular civilized government - have
been established on the experience of
those nations which were distinguish
ed for equity, clemency and durability.
This could not have been done, bad
history not in her record- preserved
facts relative to their polities.
Great advantages are often gained
during w ar, from a know ledge of the
management of some distinguished gen
eral in choosing hi- position on the
field of buttle: or in changing it, when
engaged so a- to ofl'ect a complete vic
tory in the moment of de-pair. Thus
the tactics are improved.

izing the soil.
A know ledge also, of the ino-t -plrhf
did monuments of architecture. i*gain-’
ed thereby, which serve a* models for
architects who without the information
thus gained would lie infants in then
art, whereas upon the experience of oth
ers they tit once arrive at manhood.
Science is promoted. All of these
powerful steam engines, magnetic tele
graphs, etc., are Guilt upon scientific
and philosophic principles gradually
arrived at. and preserved in the re
cords of tin- past.
What wc know of the origin of uian
and of the perfections of the Maker and
Governer of tiic universe, man’s duty
to him ami himself, i- lea rued Bt'roin
sacred history. In tiic mam changes
from prosperity to adversity, and f/.v
/’erait, tlie history of the Jew* directs
our attention particularly to the hand
of God, in chastising them when guilty
of transgressing his laws, by suffering
them to lie made slaves and again de
livering them from servitude upon re
pentance, earning the nations to serve
them in turn. But alas! for these pen
pie, w hen they rejected the Savior. —
They were scattered to every nation on
tier the stm, where man is found, re
maining to thi- day a testimony of the
truth of rite sacred records, a* well as a
monument of God’s wrath on the na
tions or individuals that treat Hi- com
mandments with indifference.
History may he compared to Jacobs
ladder, giving us a view of past events,
many of which you w ill find truly in
teresting and from which you may
gain much solid information.
