that an Iron grey mare had been stolen |
front him, our Marshal on Tuesday la-t,
captured a man who gave hi* name a*
Charles Jones, with such an animal in
hi* possession. And a dispatch to Wo-i
Point brought rhe Marshal of that city
to Marietta, who, on seeing Jones, re
cognized him a- the man who had lately
sold to Dr. Oslin the iron grey mare and
then at night stole her hack. The Mar
shal carried Jones to West Point, leav
ing the mare with Mr. J. A.t;. Ander
son, through whose skill and adroitness
Jones was detected. Since Jones' de
parture other parties have come forward
claiming the mare. So it seem* that
Jones has been freiiuently selling and
stealing the same animal.

Messrs. Editors —l was sorry to ee in
the Field oud Fireside, of a recent (hue,
the following article:
"A clerical Englishman continually
pestered by his teetotal brethren to join
‘the Church of England Temperance" As
aociation,’ sends them a post-card w Ith
Proverbs, xxxi, verses 6,7, written on
it. The verses read thus: ‘Give strong
drink unto him that is ready to perish
and wine unto those that "he of heavy
heart. Let him drink and forger his
poverty, and remember hi* misery no
more.’ ”
The clerical gentleman above men
tioned must have (teen exceedingly hard
pressed for an argument when he found
it necessary lo pervert Scripture to -w
tain him in refusing lo do what would
seem to he the duty of every M ini-fer of
the Gosjiel of Christ. If this verse -lootl
alone, it would amount to a prohibition
of stroug drink to those who were not
really to perish, hut the connection it
had with other verse- leave not doubt.
I give the two ver-es immediately pre
ceding:
It i- not for kings, O Lemuel it is not
for kings to drink wine, nor for princes
strong drink : lest they drink and forget
the law , and pervert the judgment of
any of the afflicted.
How much more careful ought a Min
i-tei of ft oil's Gospel Khe to abstain
from any appearance of evil, in Levit
icus x, 0, 10, we find these words:
And the Lord spake unto Aaron, say
ing. Do not drink wine nor-trongdrink,
thou, nor thy son w ith thee, w lieu ye go
into the tabernacle of the congregation,
lest ye die: it shall he a statute forever
throughout your generations; And that
ye may put difference between holy and
unholy,and between unclean and clean.
But ill order not to tuki* iiji your space
