SuiHla.v's Storm.
Auust.v, (i... June 10. —Tin*
I Kvening News is lilleil with ac
ctninis of tht* destruction of life
ami property, hv tin* terrible
i storm on Sunday. In the neigh
borhood of Harlem and Belair,
on the Ueorgta railroad, houses,
fences, and even ears standing on
i side tracks were overturned. At
! a Sunday school in the upper part
of this county the lit use blew
down killing two boys, aged nine
and lifteen years, the sons of a
widow Allen. < Miters are serious
ly and it is feared fatally hurt.
The large gin factory of Thomas
Wynn, at Belair. was completely
: demolished, entailing a lo Ss o||
Mr. Wynn of nearly ten thousand
dollars, no insurance. The crops
in some sections are completely
ruined, the fields looking as if a
! fire had swept over them, barge
trees were blown great distances
against houses, knocking them
down,and killing horses and eat
tie. The loss in this section is
immence. On an elevated place
near Heredia, every outhouse
was blown down, ami a large line
dwelling considerably damaged.
In Columbia county the hail
stones weighed from one to three
pounds, killing cattle and hogs,
and breaking through the shingle
roofs of houses. In South Car
olina the destruction was even
greater than on the (Georgia side
of the river, one tow n (Curry
town) being almost swept from
the lace of the earth. Along the
l harlotte road ears w ere overt tim
ed, houses were blown down, ami
crops and cattle destroyed Sev
era! deaths are reported from that
side. -('onHtittttioh.
Covington. June in. I*7o. We
were visited on yesterday at 4:30
p. m. with a heavy rain, wind ami
hail-form which ha- done very
considerable damage to crops.

At Serial t'ifele tilt* wilul blew
with tenilic force, tearing tip

number of fence- and unroofing
many houses. I'he crops in that
.-eetion, both *•0(1011 and corn,
were seriously damaged by ( lie
v**rv heavy fall of hail.
At <’on.vers and .Madison iln*
damage is said to In* very great.
At the latter jdaee, we an- in
formed, a church together willia
number of houses and stores,
wet* unroofed and other damage
done. The crops in tin* vicinity
of these towns were prostrated lv
the rain and hail which fell in
great tjuantitit*s and with great
force. Some of the hail stones.il
is said, weighed over a pound.
From advices by the up freight,
which reached this city Sunday
night,we learn 1 hat the hail sf dies
which fell on the reof of the ears
left indentations in tin* planks
which covered the ears.
The window- were broken out
of the cars, and in one *r two in
stances it is claimed llmt the
planks were shattered by the
large stones that were driven
with great force against them.
Our informant staled that tit Mad
ison many of the hailstones which
struck the car must have weighed
two pounds. The wind blew with
such force that at limes it seemed
as if the coaches would be blown
from tin- track. From all accounts
the storm must have been the
most terrific that has passed
through this section of the slate
in yea r-. ('onxt il nl ton.
John I>. Ooiuo\ affirms
that to attempt to depose Haves
would not only utterly fail, but
prove infinitely disastrous to the
integrity of the Demot ratio par
ty. Even now the Itepublicans
of the North are rallying under
the slogan of opposition to threat
ened revolution and bloodshed,
and despite the disatt'eeled spirits
among l hem,the appeal i- exertin'
a potent influence. While he was
in Boston and the East the (ien

recuperation of business were
positively suffering front the ap
prehension that disturbances and
revolution would follow the at

When Mr. Stephens expresses an
opinion that does not meet tin*
approval of some of the picayune
statesmen they "get lmpon their
"md legs hand ’owT* at him in a
manner that is distressing, simply
because it is useless noise, and
when his judgement has been
verified by results they hasten to
forget that they were ever any
thing but admirers of the "(irent
Ceorgia Commoner."
The difference between this
class and Mr. Stephens i- about
the same as young Crier (son of
the almanac maker) sai 1 existed
between himself and his lather in
regard lo weather wisdom. Said
he : -The old man always knows
about a rain tin* day before, and
I know the day after." The sage
may make a few mistakes, for In*
is "jti'i human:" hut when it
comes to a calm and dispassion
