A Wolf Adventure.
BY K. A. RILKY.
In Europe Russia, not far from
the sixth parallel of latitude, and
some twelve miles from Nikolsk.
lived a young peasant girl by the
name id' Oatharina Daroskoi.
Calharina was a lovely girl—the
fairest in all that section—and
had many admirers among the
rude Russian pesantry, and manv
had sought to win the affect ions
of the bright-eyed Oatharina;
but to Kuric I’etroski she had giv
en her heart and hand, and they
were to be married Christmas.
Our story opens in the month
of October. Stern winter, in that
high northern latitude, had al
ready bound up nature in his iev
fetters. A white mantle of snow
covered the earth, and hither and
thither the sleighs by day llierri
ly traversed the thinly settled re
gion, while by night the wolves
alone roamed over the wide
wastes, ravenously seeking what
they mightdevour, and woe be
tide the beast caught without the
fold. Oatharina's father hail [ire
pared for the winter. His stock
was all housed, and fuel and pro
visions laid in. liis family con
sisted of himself, wife and three
children < bit liarina, IX; Chris
tine, I2; and Rudolph, 10,
Billie I’etroski, Oatharina’s lie
frothed, lived but a few miles
distant, and was, as might be ex
peeled, a freijuent visitor,
Oatharina had an uncle, who,
with his family, resided about
eight miles from her fathers
house. It was an easy stretch in
the smooth running sleigh, with
the powerful black horse so gen
tie yet so strong and enduring,
and Oatharina often drove over
to her Unde Rudolph's in an
hour’s time.
Outlie morning of the 12th of
October, Oatharina concluded to
pay her uncle a visit , and t 'luis
tine and Rudolph were to ac
company her. They wrapped
themselves up warmly in furs and
blankets, and the sleigh was
brought, oqt by tljeir father, and,
soon after sunrise, they started,
Oatharina’s father telling her to
be sure to come back that night
as he wished t<> go to Nikolsk
upon business on the morrow.
Oatharina told him that they
would return without fail, and a
way they went, merrily singing a
lively song as they rapidly glid
ed along over the crisply frozen
snow,
In an hour's time they were all
ensconced at Uncle Rudolph’s
close to the blazing pine logs in
the capacious chimney, and the
black horse was snugly stabled,
The day passed away pleasant
ly. The sun was not much more
than an hour high when the black
horse and sleigh were brought
out for the visitors’ return. In
i cle Rudolph urged them to stay
all night, as a heavy cloud was
rising in the east, and he was

before sundown, even if ii, was to
i commence snowing now, and we

at Nikolsk to morrow, and will
want the horse and Heigh ”
'l would have felt easier,’said
Unde Rudolph, "as you must go,
had you started earlier; for, if
night catches you, the wotves you
know, are so ravenously hungry
now that they would he sure to
attack you.”
“No danger of night or the
wolves either catching Ms. re

Christine and Rudolph, Jr., got
in after her, and Uncle Rudolph
wrapped the blankets warmly

the family, who had come to see
them off, a cheerful good by, and
away they sped mi their return.

| few and far bet wed l/ilial, with
i the blinding snow driving in her

might not be enabled to keep to

j fears, the horse seemed disposed

ithat came whirling and healing

| left rein tightly, and ioreed him
jto face the driving storm. Now
unfortunately, the wind had
j changed, and Catherina knew it
not. The instinct of the horse
was correct, and she was wrong,
ills she soon discovered to herdjs

occupants into aluigesuow drill.
The gentle horse stopped, obedi
cut lo Ihe reins, and Calharina
and her youthful companions
gathered themselves up, worse

, Christie both crying in much a

as much as she was able, and they

This was a task of some dilli

succeeded in getting the sleigh
upon its runners, it was a Im.iit
half full of snow, and this they
had to east out as best they could.
| Finally, they all got into the,
sleigh once more, and Calharina
looked around her. She recog

come at least two miles out of
their way,c>o that they \\i re now
i fully six miles from home She
i headed the horse in the right di
| lection, and giving him the reins
they started forward once more.
Their progress was slow, as the
way they were now traversing
was uneven and the snow was
drifted up in many places, so that
lit was dillicitlly to get through ;
and Calharina, in much alarm,
began to see that njight was ap
preaching, and unless they soon
| struck the regular track, and hur
j tied forward very rapidly indeed.
it would overtake them before
| they reached home. She now
! wished that she had taken her
j uncle’s advice, and remained uu
j til the morrow. She lashed the
i horse, and lie exerted himscll to
j the utmost; yet so deep was the
j snow in many places that several
times Catharina thought that
i they would lie compelled to gel
out before tho sleigh could pa.-a
through the drift.
At last they reached the regu
lar route, as Catharina knew by
the actions of the horse, lie
bounded forward with more free
dom, and gave a joyful whinny,
expressive of relief. But. .alas!
Catharina saw that uigln was
closing around them; and she
knew, by the clump of fir trees
jin the distance, that her home
j was yet full four miles away.
The snow was not . falling so
! rapidly, and Catharina hoped
that, she would be able to gain
home ere daylight entirely de
parted and -he did not apprehend
much danger from the wolves

<)n they sped, and another mile
I was traversed when nddenlv
j
; Catharina'a heart sank within her
in dread, tor he heard the dis
taut howl of a wolf; and knew
that not many minutes would
elapse before it would be on her
track, with many more at its
heels. The horse heard the howl
ol it enemy as well as she, and
increased Ids speed to the ut

Again the howl broke on the
terrified Catlmrina’s ear, awl this
