amount of navi
the United Suites during the year
1887 was 929,448 barrels of rosin,
and 182,908 barrels spirits turpen
tine, and of.this Brunswick shipped
118,269 barrels of rosin, and 24,376
barrels of spirits turpentine—almost
as we said above, ono seventh of tho
entire shipment of tho United States.
Do not these figures sustain our
statement? / *
The value of these exports was in
round figures $066,000—considers
bly over half a million, and all gain
ed within twelve years. What will
the nex twelve bring forth?
These shipments were made in
41 vessels, loaded at our docks and
cleared at our custom .house, with
the exception of about 10,000 barrels
of rapta and 5,094 barrels of spirits
which wont coastwise to Now York.
Tho total numbor of vessels laden
with naval stores from' tho whole
United States was only 363.
The ports 6f Wilmington, Charles
ton, Savannah, Brunswick and Mo
bile supply all the naval stores of the
United Slates, shipments from New
York being only what has gone coast
wise from these ports.
Fivo ports then do all the business,
and Brunswick — little Brunswick
that a few years ago was not men
tioned in connection wlthjthls trade,
and now actually supplies opo-sov-
enthof tho entire quantity I Ib it
too much to predict that the end of
1888 will show her contributing her
tall quota of one-fifth of the whole?
Branswick’s business 1n this line
is done by two houses, Messrs. Down
ing Jr., A Co., and Mr. J. S. Thomas
this being the latter gentleman’s first
year. Downing A Co., ships entirely
for Paterson, Downing A Co., of New
York, who do a larger business than
any other firm in the country in the
same time, Their shipments during
the past year have been 60 per cent
of all the rosin and 40 per cent of all
the Bpirito shipped by the whole
United States, employing 182 vessels
out of a total of 368. The naval

declined the offor. It certainly seems
that the proposed terms were liberal
to tjic East Tennessee Company, bnt
the directors of that road are said to
have declined the bargain Btmply be
cause they discovered upon examina
tion that tho Georgia Midland was
not now earning more than half of its
fixed charges.
