Calcutta, in its central ports, is sup
plied with water from many miles’ up
the Hooghly. It is settled and Altered
in largo reservoirs, and seems, as it is
pronounced to be, fairly pure water.

A Patent Medicine Miin’e Success.
Fall River, Mass., points proudly to
the fact that tho into Perry Davis, “the
pain killer,” was a carpenter in that city
forty years ago or more. When ho
* found his panacea for all ills ho left his
bench and took to peddling medicine in
a basket. His neighbors told him ho
was foolish to desert his trade in such a
manner, but Davis never doubled liis
ability to mako a foriuno with his “pain
killer.” Ho went to Providence, R. I.,
and became proprietor of what was after
ward tho largest patent medicine estab
lishment in tlio world. lie died somo
years ago, leaving a largo estate to his

AN ORDINANCE
To declare standing pools of water,
and low or wet places within the
limits of the city of Brunswick, a
nuisance, and to provide for the
abatement of same.
Suction 1. Be it, and it hereby ordained by
the Mayor and Council of the city of Brunswick,
in Council assembled, that from and after the
passage of this Ordinance, tho allowing pools of
water to stand for any length of time, upon any
lot ofland, within the limits or said city, is detri
mental to tho public health and safety and is
hereby declared to be a nuisance; and each and
evcry'oxvner ot any lot in said city upon which
pools of water collect, is hereby required, upon
a written request of the Bonrd of Health of said
city, to 1111 up such lot with additional earth, or
to ditch and drain said lot. so that such standing
waterihull be removed therefrom, and all wet
or inai'shy soil shall become dry land.
Skc.8. Bo it further, In like nmner ordained,
that if any owner of such lot, upon receipt of
such notice and request from the Bonrd of
Health, ns prescribed in the preceding section of
this Ordinance, shall fail or refuse to comply
therewith, it shall be the duty of the Marshal of
said city to cause snld nuisance to be abnted nnd
said lot to tie filled up or drained, and after so
doing shall Hie with the i ierk and Treasurer of
snld city a statement of tho amount of the ex
penses incurred bv him in so doing, and there
upon the Clerk and Treasurer aforesaid shall is
sue an execution against tho lands and tene
ments, goods and chattels of thcowner or owners
of said lot, for tho amount so expended by the
said Marshal, which execution shall be levied
and collected by the Marshal, by levy and sale,
as is done in cases of delinquent tax payers.
Bo, it further, in like manner ordained, that
nllrodinnnccs or parts of ordinances, in conflict
with this Ordinance be und the same are hereby
repealed.
