A Strange Malady.
Legrand writes on “Narcolepsy" _
the current number of The Franco iledi-
calo. This consists in sudden attacks of
deep sleep lasting some minutes; not days
like a trance or seconds like, petit mai.
Moreover, the oonditien is one apparently
of simple sleep, from which the patient
may easily bo aroused. Brain congestion
resulting from deficient heart action,
gastric troubles or derangements of. t]io
liver, and such diseases as gout, diabetes
> and rheumatism, ore some of its associa
tions. The fat boy Joe of the “Pickwick

“Nature" gives us a curious explana
tion of tbo flat pieces of iron, five or six
inches long and shaped like a letters,
which nro occasionally seen on tho walls
of old brick houses. This is said to bo
on ancient symbol of tho sun. They say
in rural parts of England that it protects
tho Iiouso from fire. The samo sign was
on old official seals in Sicily and the Isle
of Man and elsewhere. You may oven
trace it back to Asia, and to an era be
fore history. The curious part of it is
that such habits should so long survive
tho superstition, and Asiatic myths be
written on Yankee walls.—Globe-Demo

Fop Testing the Kyeslght.
The “opsiomter” is n new instrument
for testing tho eyesight. It consists of a
mahogany case with two front eyeholes,
behind which are two traveling bands
mounted on rollers. Thcso bands have

and the person whose sight is to be tested
looks through tho- iioies nnd lenses at

How to Fronouneo “Goethe."
It is said thnt tho literary peoplo of
Chicago arc divided into three hostile
camps over the question how Goethe's
name should bo pronounced. One frac
tion says it should rhyme with “teeth,"
• another maintains that it should rhymo
with “dirty,” whilo still another asserts
that it should rhymo with “eighty."—
