Another Prodigious Sham.
For “sweet charity's soke" covers
another prodigious-sham. If a woman
desires to become a shining light in
society charity is mnde tiio ladder for
such an ambition. Site limits the poor

children very interesting and pitiful, and

arrogant, unconventional, and tasteless
person, who, after earning lierown bread,
became the wife of a millionaire and
edged herself into society through various
Charities—that snubbed a young author

A Triton’s Hand Discovered.
The excavations on the Acropolis, at tho
southri-1 angle of the Parthenon, havo
resulted further ,in a discovery of tho
highest importance. At a depth of
about four meters from t.\o present level,
near the i.ew Acropolis fim.-eum, lias
been found the bearded head «f a man
of lu-ruo sine, carved in porous stone,
well preserved and retaining a covering
of rieli mid brilliant coloring. The hair
and 1 K-.n-i t are, ns usual, painted blue and
the face red. What is remarkable, how
ever, is that tho pupils of the eyes are not
only minted in, but also delineated with
chisel. Tills head, whloh foams one of
tho most ancient' sculptures ever found
upon tho Acropolis, will attract consider
able attention lioth from tho stylo of
workmanship and the material of which
it is made. It appears to be the hood of
a triton, the rest of the body in tho form
of a seriK-nt. ending in the tail of a fish,
having been 'found a few days before
near tho some place.—London Atho-
