wrangling lot, their owners, the girniin-

They are full of song and wine, und sleep

Tliero is another thing that I have been
glad to notice over here, and that is the
generosity of the rich to the poor. I have
never seen a beggar hold out his band in
vain; but then all mendicants who con

to procure employment are licensed here,
and you generally know that your cop

go far astray. 1 understand, though,

street corners, and I am told you cannot
take a step without putting your hand in
your pockets; and it is well to go with

An Immense Wire Hope.
A wire ropo half a milo long, bix and
one-fourth inches in circumference, and
weighing seven and one-half tons, lias
been manufactured at Gateshead, Eng
land. There ait) 6ix strands of nineteen
wires each in it, the breaking strain of
the whole being 175 tons, and that of
eacli wire in the rope 120 tons to the
square inch. This immense ropo is to be
used in a colliery in North Wales.—New
York Sun.
A Deaf Cow.
Evidence exists that deaf mutes are not
confined to the human race. In a
farmer's herd for twelve years was n cow
which never gave any signs of hearing,
and whose evident attempts at lowing |
resulted only in n feeble guttural.
Nothing abnormal could be discovered in
the caw nor in the vocal organs.—Boston
