Tho "Self Limited'
The nature of the cause of a given dis
ease has much to do with its duration.
In the so called rtsa-stuil j'evers, such ns
typhus, typhoid, r. l...-ing and yellow
fever, the cause i. a uinlitu vegetable
organism that seeuis to attain its full de
velopment within a very short time, after
which it produces its progeny and dies.
There is no more clianco of one of them
becoming chronio than there is of raising
several crops of oats or barley from onco
sowing the seed. These are, truly, tho
“seif limited" diseases. It is fortunate
in many particulars that such a large
proportion of diseases are of this charac
ter. It makes but little difference in the
treatment of them what the drugs used
may be, so long as the strength is kept
upvand no harm is done. Tlio main
thing is to keep tho patient alive a given
number of days, when, the cause ex
hausts itself and recovery ought to fol
low.—Globe-JDemocrat.

Thero are a great many among the rich
people in New York at the present u™
who lose real social enjoyment. Having
suddenly acquired wealth, they have be
come separated from their old friends
and acquaintances with whom, in earlier
days, they spent many a sociable and
sensible evening. They give big dinners

Marriage Among the Afghans.
Among the Afghans' marriage is a
case of purchasing tho bride. A rich
Afghan marries early, simply because ho
cause he can afford to pay for a wife,
while a poor one often remains singlo
until middle life, on account of his ina
bility to purchase. If tire husband dies
and the yridow wishes to marry again,
she or her friends have to refund the
purchase money to the friends of the
dead husband. Like the Jews, a com
mon custom is for tiro brother of the de
ceased to marry tho widow. No other
person would think of wedding her
without first asking this brother’s con
sent.—Thomas Stevens in .Now York

Mortality of English Infants.
It is said that 40 per cent. Of all the
deaths from poison in Great Britain are
duo to opium, and tiiis rate of mortality,
according to Dr. AVynter Blythe, ■•oiis's
in a great measure from the pernicious
practice, both of hard working English
mothers and the baby farmer, of giving
infants ‘soothing syrups,’ ‘infants’
friends, ‘ and the like, to allay restless
ness and keep them asleep during the
greater part of their existence." ' It has
been calculated that one preparation'
alone is tiie undoubted cause of death of
150,000 children every year.—PuUto
