Records of building naaociationa—that!
U, docletiea for enabling aubacribew tw
bond or purchnao dwelling hotues—date
back as far os 1781 in Birmingham, Eng-i
land. The number and oost of houses'
built depended upon the number of shares!
owned by tho subecribcr. The rents of,
the houses were paid to the treasurer of
the building association. Lands intended
for building purposes were laid out in
lots, hid far by subscribers, and let to
them on long time leasee. M«mWapnt^

Practical Art for Girts.
• Think of 600 girls painting egg shells!
These shells are suspended from windows
and mantels by hilken threads or they are
used as breakfast or German favors. It,
is alleged that deooQitlvo painting is
more remunerative than any other branch
of art and is at tho present time more
popular in refined society than piano
playing or dancing. Another .fad is em-.
nellishing the table china with portraits
of tho family and relatives. At one of
tjto large art institutions I found that an*
other branch of remunerative art was the
designing of quaint and artistic costumes
not alone for the stage, but for indoor oc
casions of fashionable persons.—Boston

Oysters nt Feed Ing Time.
Oysters cannot bo kept without a
knowledge 'of Their habits.' Tliey feed
twice in a day of twenty-four hours, and
then just at that stillness preceding' tho
turn of tho tide. At*no other time, ex
cept when feeding, do they open their
mouths. When taken out of the water
they naturally attempt to feed at regular
intervals, and as. soon as their mouths
are open the liquor is all lost, tho air
takes its place, and tho oyster Is covered
with a thick coating of slime. This is
the first stago of decomposition, after
which tho oyster is of no account.—Seat

The French Soldler*a Defect..
A French military writer.'M, Do
Fletres. in an essay sn tho education of
tho French infantry, makes some very
serious charges against tho French sol
dier. The latter, he says in effect, has
serious moral as well ns physical defects;
grossly abuses his officers when >ut of
hearing, is careless and slovenly, '.as no
heart for military service, and, when op
portunity comes, conceals all trace of its
‘ insignia.—Scientific American.
