to eradicate quackery pernjaneutly waa
founded on theehrewdneeiof Itaprofee-

Yet it ie eurpriring hownHWh oflhM
old time ignoranoe which mndo witch-
late. Dr. Ebrdyeo Barker, whllo at
tending Ur.' Conkltag, waa oo
annoyed by worthy people who wanted
him to try eome rldlculou* nostrum on
hla distinguished patient They were of
exactly the some class as that very ro
spectublo gentleman who carries about a
small potato or an onion in his pocket to
ward off rheumatism. He does not be
lieve in signs, nor omens, nor isms; but
• how does ho differ from the poor darky
who carries about a rabbit foot in his
racket to shield him from the evil eyef
He smiles depret^tingly, but carries the
potato and assures you confidentially
that, however it may be. in his particu
lar case it worked wonders. Tho
miserable wretch who killed an inof
fensive Chinaman tho other day “for
fun," was more anxious to keep an amu
let he had in bis pocket than his liberty,
and ho reasoned about as well as the
man who carries a potato In his pocket,
but not a particle of tho knowledge of
__ the laws of life and health in his bead.
The publio discussion of the ntUictions
of Garfield, Grant, Conkling and Kaiser
Frederick have done much good by un
covering a vast amount of popular ignor
ance even where it was not suspected.
It showed that many who were ready to
corei all diseases in the body politic did
not know the first symptom of disease in
their own bodies. Men with their fingers
always on the public pulse did not know
where to feel for their own pulse. Men
conversant with n.l mner history know
absolutely nothing of tin. history of medi
cine. Men able to trace the cause of
political convulsions never were able to
account for that first stroke of paralysis.
Such men were sure they could have
ewed Mr. Conkling’s disease by the
steam of a hot potato. They know that
Garfield could have been saved if they
had been given chargo of him in time,
though the post mortem proved that his
wound' was fatal from the first. The
number of infallible reme’dies soul to
Gen. Grunt was log mi Half of the old
women in Germany are seriously grieved
because they aro not allowed to 6avo tho
kaiser from his doctors by a remedy that
camo down to them from their great
grandmothers. ,
All of this proves that so far as medi
cine is concerned we are in the middle
cuzes yet. . No lDrooer- nrovision is made
in schools for tho prevention of quackery,
as begins to bo made for the prevention
of intemperance by teaching tho effects
of alcohol. Many a graduate is not er
ectly clear as to which side his heart is
on, or what it is there for. When it
comes to tho spleen? the colon, the nerves,
he better understands tho geography of
interior Africa.
Tho science of medicine advances un
der difficulties, the greatest of which is
popular ignorance. When wo learn to
know how little wo know then wo will
commence to advance. Then fairly edu
cated men will not commenco to prescribe
for a friend and suggest doubts ns to his
physician beforo knowing anything moro
of the disease than of tho doctor. No
greater boon could be bestowed on the
coming doctor than a generation thor
oughly educated in physiology, anatomy
and hygiene. We will never bo rid of
'quacks and quackeuY until we stop breed
ing the ono and encouraging the other,
by turning over the whole subject of dis
ease, ns of old, to a special class, whether
sorcerers or doctors.—Chicago Times.
Whjr Orators Aro Few.
Tho ago Ini which we livo is progres
sive and aggressive, but it will not pro
duce such orators and preachers ns there
were forty and fifty years ago. It pro
duces better doctors, and teachers, and
fanners, and merchants, and mechanics,
but not such statesmen or pulpit orators.
Kentucky has no longer a Clay, and
Breckinridge, and Marshall. Tennessee
bas no Gentry, dr Maynard, or Johnson,
or Haskell. Mississippi no Foote or
Prentiss. Alabama no Yancey. Georgia
no Toombs, or Hill, or Stephens, or
Johnston, or Cobb. South Carolina no
Calhoun, or Clioves, or Hayno, or Rut
ledge. North Carolina no Macon, or
Mangum. or Badger. Virginia no Jef
ferson, or Patrick Henry, or Madison.
I know that the mosses of tho people
have advanced, and therefore there is
not snch a contrast between them and
tho great men as there used to bo, but it
is still certain that the most notablo men
of the day will not compare with those I
have mentioned. We have some great
preachers, but none .to compare with
Capers, and Styles, and Pearce, and Baa-
comb, and tho blind preacher. Waddell,
whom William Wirt made famous. This
is a utilitarian age, and everybody is in a
hurry. There was a time when men of
brains had leisure, and Solomon says
that in leisure there is wisdom.—Bill
Arp in Atlanta Constitution.
