A novel spectro-telegraphic apparatus
has been constructed by Dr. Paul la Our,
a Danish physicist. It projects u steady
vertical spectrum, on which, with a spe
cial telescope, red and blue dots and lines
are seen to appear and disappear. These
are Morse signals, produced by the break
ing of the spectrum by the opening mid
shutting of little slits, displaying tho col
ored dots and lines. This is effected by
an electrical arrangement having lettered

The Astor library contains amoi
historic relics aedpy of ft letter of Colum
bus, of which only six aro known to be
inexistence. Ono. of these copies sold
for (700 at an auction sale in London in
1872. Tills letter was written by Colum
bus at Lisbon, and is addressed to Ra
phael Sanchis, treasurer to the king Of
Spain. A Latin version of the letter was
printed in Rome. The letter is descrip
tive of - his travels and discoveries. It
wss presented to the library by Mr. W.
