The steamer Caroline Miller reach

get past quarantine and go straight

hours in making the trip. The State
of Texas that left here the same time
stopped at Port Royal and conse
quently failed to get a hearing from

get up to tho city until to-day.

Edwards last night by a mob of
maaksimsn. This action no doubt
waa called forth by the results of the
new trial of Horace Bee at Baxley
last week. Beo was sentenced to l>c

al was granted and he was turned
loose. The people of Jesup thought
they would take no such risk, so took
the law in their own hands.
When we talk with the people
about these things they say the courts
and tho lawyers are to blame for
such laxity in the punishment of
crime as to call for sueh action of
the people. When we speak with
the legal fraternity they answer “the
fault is not ours, but the people’s—
they lack the nerve to say a man is

Sanitation in Sea-Going Ships.

not satisfied with ordinary fumiga
tion, as will be shown by the follow
ing, from the journal of commerce.
Washington, October 8.—Surgeon-
General Hamilton, with the appro
val of the President and Acting Sec
retary Thompson,, has -issued the fol
lowing circular in regard to the treat
ment! foul ships:
^Brder to stimulate shipmasters
to brain securing a clean ocean-going
fleet, the following regulation con
cerning the treatment of foul ships
is hereby adopted and will be observ
ed at all national quarantine sta
tions:.
“When a vessel arrives at aby na
tional quarantlho station from an In
fected port and requires disinfection,
she will bo subject to ordinary dis
infection, as provided m former reg
ulations. *
2. When any vessel shall arrive
at any national quarantine station in
suoMfoul condition as to render her
da^prouB from a sanitary point of
vlewrand is found to require cleans
ing and disinfection, and having at
any former time within ono year been
subjected to ordinary dis
infection, such vessels will be re
quired to undergo extraordinary dis
infection, which, in addition to the
ordinary measures, will include holy
stoning, Bcraping, the taking out of
rotten wood, a second disinfection
and interior re-pninting, all of which
will bo required before grouting a
certificate of free practique.”
Public School.
All the seats in the White.Prepar
atory School, and in the First and
Second Grades of the hclson. Gram
mar School, have been filled. It will
therefore be impossible to receive
any more pupils in those depart
ments.
There arc fifteen vacant seats in
the Third and Fourth Grades of the
Nelson Grammar School, and fifteen
in the various Grades of the Glynn

Presbyterians Incensed.
Charleston, , S. C., Oct. 13.—The
Presbyterians here are very much in
censed at a resolution adopted by the
Charleston Presbytery at Aiken last
week “forbidding the public conten
ding against tho decision of tho as
sembly in referenco to the origin of
man.’’ A number of pastors announ
ced that thoy will refuse to obey the
resolution, which it seems has just
come to light
