Money would lie left in the box, and
next morning no money would be
found. Last night John Gonoway
and another barber resolved to watch
for the intruder. iThey took their
stand, and a little before nine, the
back gate opened and a man entered.
He took a key from bis pocket* and
opened the door. He remained in
sides short wliilc,andthenoame out.
At the door he was met by tlje two
watchers, bat he broke from them
and rap. Conoway flred.a# him twice
one ball striking ’ him in the leg and
the other in the back.
A great crowd gathered, and ex
iami nation proved the wounded man
ito he Frank Berry, a negro with a
bad reputation. He was removed to
a house near by, and given medical
attention. C< mo way gave himself tip,
and was lodged in jail.
Lumber Hen Sad.
Every lumber man that comes to
the city from the lines of road says
the lumber business is not what it
ought to he—that lumber is scarce
along the roads, and it costs more to
get tho logs from the woods by their
. tramways than formerly, and that
the roads have gone up on price of
writing is a lost art does, pot go be
yond a few fdcble assertions.
The main point seems to be lost
sight of—it is the fact that a men
mast ‘first have a story to tell before
he can write a novel. If he has no
message to deliver—nothing worth
telling, he will produce nothing but
trash.
The trouble is that our amateur
Writers get a thousand views of life
from books wberethey get one glimpse
of it from nature. The result ism
weak imitation, a rehash of old plots
and ideas. It was not so with Field
ing, Smollett, Scott, Dickens and Du
mas. They read few novels besides
their own. Thev were men whose
animal spirits* ..ud thorough enjoy
mentof ilTc kc. ' them -nr.-, ing about
In the outside world, in the streets,
in the forests, among people. When
they described life it was a reproduc
tion of their own vivid impressions,
and not a faint copy of some half for
gotten story already in print.
The best story writers of the day
are the French, and it is a well known
fact that they do very little reading.
On the other hand, our blumsieht and
most uninteresting novelists are the
Americans who have a craze for what
ne*s of this country will dry up' lit
erally. To add to theirtroubles lum
ber is worth less money by $5 per
thousand feet, so with freights 25
•cent higher, logs harder to get, and
prices lower, the avers ,e lumberman
cries out for the‘‘days of auld lang
sine." ,
Railroad officials should take this
problem in hand and make what con
cessions they can in order to perpet
ii:itc this sofrree of wealth.
“Half Bushel to the Hill."
I The fall of 1888 is proving u big
one for the potatq crop of the county.
The ground is literally bursting with
the accumulating and growing roots
Mr. C. B. Moody, who lives over the
river, .brought in this morning the
product of a single hill—all connect
ed to the mother seed—which fills a
half bushel measure. With such a
yeid our farmers ought to have fat
stock of all kinds this season. In
speaking of his crop Mr. Moody said
that he “would have potatoes until
he couldn’t rest’*—an expression
meaning a superabundance.
Still They Come.
From every direction people con-
tinuu to come into Brunswick. Mr.
L. - Johnson; of PikeA Johnson, lum
ber dealers, of Grrifegh, Go., is here
'today arranging mb ,build several
‘houses, one fine one for himself, an
other for hia son-in-law, Mr. Bran-
han, and others to rent. He purchas
ed some fine lots hese some time ago
from the Brunswick Company, and
will now .proceed to build on them.
We shall welcome his family to the
city. Good citizens, we are always
iflaii to greet.

makes his mark as. a writer must
have something worth saying and he
must be unacquainted with the work
of his predecessors in the same field;
the point is that he must use books
and command them, and not be their
slave and copyist. Books are dead

Your Nickname.
Here is something to amuse your
self with when you havon’t anything
better to do. Put down . in figures
the year of your birth, add to it your
age and the figure 4. Multiply the
result by 1,000, from which subtract
677,423. In the answer substitute
letters for the figures, the different
letters being numbered as they run
in the alphabet, thus: A. 1; b. 2; c.
8, ete. The result will glve.you the

An express line was put' on the
new railroad through Dooly county
last week. The vindicator says that
the first express received at the Vi
enna office was three jugs of Macon’s
double barrelled, self-acting, silver
mounted, place destroying, death
dealing destruction.
The subscription list for the pur
pose of erecting a new cotton factory
in Americus is rapidly filling up. It
has now reached the point where the
factory is assured.
