OCTOBER 22, 1888,
That Torpcdo(f)
There has lain for years, ia its
present bed in the mad near the
B. & W. dock, an old iron hull of
some kind that long ago oeased to
interest the average Brunswiekian,
but in these latter days so many
strangers pass that spof, and want to
know what that carious shaped iron
thing can possibly be, some one has
nought to get even with the inquisi
tive passer-by, and has therefore la
beled it— ' '
“This Torpedo
• USED AT
Port Royal ih 1865.".
And now even the old citizetas, who
have seen that old hull lie- there for
twenty odd years,, are wondering
what it can lie, and, if a torpedo, how
-the“plagusy thing was ever fired.”
For the benefit of the seeker after
•truth we will fftate that Capti James
■Clubb informs us that this object
which has so suddenly come into no
tice is an old bell b^py that used to
be anchored on Dpboy bar in 1858,
’59 and ’60. In *61 it broke from its
moorings during a fearful northeast
gale, : and was gashed up on St. Si
mons beach, and later on whs towed
up to. Brunswick and left where it
how lies. • The Captain informs us
that it has guided him to sea with at
least 150 vessels that he has towed
•out from the port of Darien and Do-
. boy. The bell was hung in the mid|
die.of the boat or buoy, and .every
movement of the water caused it to
ring, tfrus warning off the mariner
ftor^ ^dangerous shoal, even at night
when too dark to see the buoy.
This greatest of all questions to Cheapness In Vtfll ‘fulfil
, A -Beautiful Home.
A traveler along the B. & W. R. R.
In the neighborhood of Nahunta
would not suppose that only, a few
miles’away the country changes and
furnishes some elegant residence lots.
On one of these lots Mr. P. H. Baker
has put a nice homo which he pro
poses to beautify and adorn until it
shall blossom and bloom like an oasis
in the forest of pines that thrive in
that seotion. Mr. M. A. Baker, the
plumber, went up there thin morning
bo Bee what would he wanted in the
way of plumbing, asthe house is to
be furnished tfitb water throughout
Mr. Baker is one of the wuccessful
turpentine men of that section. Be
sides his farm he has erected a mill
and will {tarnish the market with
lumber, which will be brought to the
railroad on a tram. The water for
bis residence willbe pumped up by
the engine of his mill.

The engineers, we Ivaro, will soon

‘A suggestion has been made to ar
range for the legal issuing of bonds
Jbr this work. Heretofore we have
fought the bond idea, believing the
work could be done by piece—so
mhch each year—say $20,000 worth,
is In conversation with members of the
finance committee, we glean as their
idea, that to raise that amount over
and above other actual needs would
1% impossible, so then that leave us
but the one resort, namely, bonds.
The very thought of these, however,
sends cold chills through our veinB,
and makes ub shudder.
We haveabout reached the conclu
sion that as bitter as is the pill we
must prepare to swallow it, unless
the wtodom of Council will suggest a
better way. ;
In making this- concesion, howev
er, we are by no means in favor of a
blind issuing of bonds. We would
throw ground it certain restrictions
First, that it should be submitted
to the people^ and secbndly that said
bonds should be put into the hands
of a special committee, composed, say
of three citizens and two members of
OunoUr-4 regular bond commission.
With these restrictions we would
be willing to issue bonds, and otaly
so much each year as are absolutely
necessary, say $40,000 the flrst.year.
That amonnt could be placed right
herein our midst, for they" would be
n goocbinvestmsntfor capital.

iness men don't wear the latter and
haven’t time to think whether their

mass of mail matter awaits them in
the morning. A glance is sufficient.
Two cent letters arc looked into; one

contain important information, bat
if the party desiring to convey it
doesn’t value it at two cents the mer

waste his time picking it out from
the pile of chaff that comes in this
form.
The vendors of patent nostrums,
etc., are catching on to this fact and
quite a number deem the extra ex
penditure necessitated by the use of
2c. stamps a wise measure. They are
beginning too, to use plain envelopes
Hitherto a glance at" the corner was
almost sufficient to denote the con
