1 beg space In your columns
piyto the two questions asked by
“Patron” in your issue of Tuesday.
In the first place, the “Principal of
the Academy” does not fill the posi
tiou of County School Commissioner.
Under the special act of the Legists
ture providing a. system of public
schools for Glynn county, an “Acid- gain8 in itg V<4lng 8tren cth. The T
emy” is unknown. The act, indeed,
in so many minds abolishes the
$Glynn Academy, and merges it and
, its affairs in the Board of Education
of the county. Under the not a sys
tem of public schools has been organ*
ized, |ineluding the entire county.
Thepu^lio schoolsof JBranswick are
but a part pf the system. The aet

When I was invited to come to
Brunswick, the .Board inquired if I
would agree to act as Principal of
I, and at /the
the-Glynn High School
frame time superintend the other
width schools and the Bisley school.
I, answered affirmatively. I then
. read the special act. saw that the
County School Commissioner was in
fact Superintendent of the schools,
and at once wrote the late Dr. G. J.
vOrr, lnquwfe how I' could carry out
the Board's wishes. He replied:
; “Ybu can do so bvvinaki
imports through the' Count;
Commissioner—that is,
his assistant.”
.This is wnat I did until I
ted County School Commissioner.
In June the Board found, thaj; the
schools had grown so large thatthe;"*
linoro'teachers, ai
Bo should
it each school as circumstances re
quired. In consequence, -Hiss Mat-
tie Gale was elected principal of the
Nelson Grammar School, Miss Bessie
Spear of the White Preparatory
School, and George E. Johnson, Prin
cipal of Rjslev School. I was elected
Superintendent. Therefore, when I
wa3 elected County School Commis
sioner, I was not Principal of any of
the schools.
When Mr. E. A. Nelson found it
necessary, by reason of a press of
other duties, tor resign the position
of County School Commissioner, the
Board, in strict conformity with the
special act, decided to elect me as his
•successor. Before doing so, however,
the Board directed Mr. Nelson to
write State School Commissioner J.
S. Hook and inquire if there was any
obstacle in the way of my election.
The reply was an emphatic negative.
In other words, State School Com
missioner Hook thought that both
under the general State laws and the
special act I could bo elected. The
Board acted accordingly.
As far as my Bupertising my own
acts is concerned, I do no more of
that than any other county officer
does ; and, like* those of all other
county officers, my act: are subject
to the scrutiny of the grand jury.
If yoh will permit me a fe^ words
more[ I will state that I shall con
tinue to use my time and whatever
talents I may have in the earnest
effort to promote the best interests of
the public schools of Brunswick.
Further, with the assistance which
Mr. Nelson has kindly agreed to give
me. I shall endeavor to improve, in
every way possible, the country
schools. Respectfully yours,
A. I. Branham.

The Philadelphia Record says:
“Georgia cotton pickers are paid 40
cents a day.” Very true, so far as it
goes. They are paid 40c. a day—
and more. Forty cents a hundred
pounds would be more nearly cor
rect, and frequently a picker is found
who can gather more than 300 pounds
a day. The Record is not very well
posted on cotton picking in Geor
