While many of us are discussing
the different schemes for the attrac-
traction of visitors, and the advance
ment of our common welfare, would
it not be wise to pay some little at
tention to the fact that we are be
hind the age in one particular at
least.
We have our artesian wells, our
electric lights; our street railways,
our fine hotel, our attractive parks,
but 1 will venture the assertion that
no place of like size and pretention
has such sights as may be witnessed
on our principal streets and squares
at certain times.
It only reminds one that instead
of being up with the progressive pe
riod, we still cling to a system in
vogue decades past, and that instead
of the streets, parks, etc., being for
the people, they are used as pas
tures for our fine(?) stock—the total
results of which can better be imag
ined than described.
What a glorious sight it will bo
for our Northern visitors to note.dur
ing their daily rambles, the rural as
pect of every thing around them.
Many of them may not be accustomed
to such sights except during their
summer journeys, and they can bear
witness to the fact that while our
Jerseys (?) have an occasional spicy
diet of japonicas, callas, geraniums
and roses, it shows no improvement
over the clever treatment of the
North. Anti-Cow.

Captain Anders Loworsen and Miss
Emily Sturtevant, of this city. The
happy couple sailed this morning at
3 o’clock. The ceremony was wit
nessed by Mrs. Brown.
This unseemly hour recalls to
mind a marriage that occurred in an
adjoining county several years ago.
The rsin was pouring, and the mag
istrate, for so he was, hearing the
call from without, raided a window
at the side of his bed, and learning
the cause of the visit, thus tied the
knot, while the couple stood outside
in the rain: •
“Under tills window In stormy weather
I Join this man and woman together;
Hay none bntBe who kulea the thunder
Tear this man and woman aanndor.”

Our Sidewalks.
We again call the attention of the
“powers that be” to the condition of
our sidewalks, ^ wherever* pipe has
been put in. Pedestrians can locate
one of these pipes months ufterwards
wherever put in. The bricks are
either above grade an inch or else
there is a depression left in the walk.
Some law ought to be enforced to
put a stop to this. Whilst on this
subject we wish to again refer to a
suggestion once made before: That
parties laying sidewalks should make
them higher next to the building than
on the edge next to the street. A
failure to observe this rule leaves the
walks flat,' and after a shower pedes
trians have to pick their way to
avoid stepping into pools of water.
And don’t you forget it. We are
selling 56 inch tricot, at 75cts a
yard. * J. J. Lissner 4s Co.
