Cnpt DIxod—Sewerage— The >d
Tertlser-Appeal. ‘
C*pt Dixon baa wasted a whole expressed it, to be “the biggest thing
column of the Hews’ space this morn
ing to review a little sqftb in Satur
day’s Advertiser-Appeal, which he
dignifies as editorial in which we say:
It Is a pnbllo calamity that' the the tableaus will be skillfully man-
bond and sewerage election has been
post|>oned for another month. The
sooner it is over and' settled, the
better tor the town and people.
Having quoted us as above, he
then goes on to raoraltsd:
1 “Only this and nothing more.”
Short and sweet;* sort of .off band
. way of disposing of a matter that haa
engaged tho deliberate and., earnest
attention of the Mayor and Council
nearly two years. They engaged the
services of an eminent sanitary en
gineer, who has taken a survey of
the city and furnished a map, giving
■f ■ a comprehensive plan of the grades
necessary to a first class system of
sewerage. They have had an ordi
nance framed by.the best legal talent
-■feiSaBibe city (and.which M ajsgoodaa'
the State affords) t&j^vfdfr&uffvjltjrn
and means to not only put in Sewer-
!: age, but;to build schools, council
chamber, market bouse, quarantine
station arid surface drainage. This
ordinance, u perfected, the council
submit to the citizens of Brunswick
for their consideration until Jan. 22,
■£ when they will ba called on to vote
f for or against itaa they may think is
-' best for their interests.
I cannot see where the calamity
business comes in. The Advertiser-
Appeal has a plan of its own. It is
opposed to issuing bonds. It proposes
to take $20,000 out of the city treas-
' ury the firstyiar and put in the main
> ; sewer, and so on year by year until
•' ■ the system of sewerage is complete.
X, The plan is good so far, 'but it does
, Xncit provide anything for schools,
m' ’ J >ffliuiciixhaiBhftr,'marfnt hopae^iaw-
tine station or surface dralriage,
- nil of whioh is important to the fu
ture growth of the city.
Now Captain yoH have wasted a
heap of valuable time and space to
answer that little squib that needs
no word of oors to prove its truth
fulness. We reiterate it here, “tho
sooner it is over the better” for any
discussion where strong opinions
clash tend to divide our people and
we want union of strength and pur
pose to carry out the grand schemes
in progress around us. .
Again, we are much obliged to the
Captain for his left-handed compli
ment about “multum in parvo,” etc.,
but we care nothing about that, what
we have been endeavoring to do has
been accomplished. The people are
discussing the questions involved
both in private and through the pub
lic prints and thus “light” on this
important question is being gotten.
The Advertiser's plan of building
this sewerage has been approved by
some of the best minds in this city—
men who say that we talked more
sense in that one article than all the
balance that has been written, (we
don’t think so, however). We are
all agreed that sooner - or later we
shall want sewerage—the only difier-
ence is when, and how. Wo are en
titled to 6ur opinions and so is Mr.
Dixon. We have given ours, he has
given his.
When the vote is taken it will be
found that the voice of the people
will be “against bonds.” They will
be found to stand where the Adveb
tiser-Appeal stands—“for sewerage,
but not for bonds.”
The Entertainment
To-morrow night promises, as a lady
of the •holidays.” A splendid pro
gram has been arranged, so diversi
fied As to be truly enjoyable. The
musical features promise tobe perfect,
aged, the gyriuaqiic exhibition will
be a revelation of skill, and the spell
ing bee will be the crowning climax.
We feel warranted to urge upon all
not to miss this entertainmedt,

When you fastened that coil
of telegraph wire across Newcastle
street, above the park, last night,
you thought you were having lots of
fun, but did you think about the fact
that the first horse that struck that
wire would probably be frightened
and run away, and possibly injure or
kill the occnpants of the vehicle?
That wire was removed just in time
to save a horse and buggy from go
ing into it at a rapid speed, but if it
had not been taken down in time,
there is no telling what might have
happened. Don’t do that again. Get
your fun some other way.
Death of Mrs. Foster.
