I A Business Look. *
Everything at the coaf yard of
Messrs. Coney & Parker has a busi
ness air about it. The appliances for
handling and weighing the coal are
complete. The wharf, coal bins, etc.,
all have an air of business about
them, and the young men themselves
are business all over. They have set
out to do business on business prin
ciples, and in a business way, and
they are going to succeed. We point
to them as two deserving yonng men
in our business community.
Not a Candidate.
We are informed that Dr. J. A.
Butts will not be a candidate for
Port Physician, for the reason that
it will interfere with his pri vate|prac;
tiCe. The doctor has been tendered
the position of consulting physioian
to. the Oglethorpe Hotel the present
season, and this may, perhaps, have
influenced his decision in this mat
ter. ' ' ’
Don't Stick to the Text.
Unless our neighbor, Dixon, will
stick closer to his text,' it is useless
fqr us to argue the bond business
with him farther. To illustrate, we
him this query with five others:
“Why go in debt when you can
keep out of itf”
His answer was: “It is better to
go in debt gnd secure a healthy town
than to go to the gravd yard.”
The other answers are on a par
with this one. So unless ho intends
sticking to the text closer than that,
we might aa well dismiss the discus
sion. No “light” is being dissetpins-
ted by each viewers.

Mater to leave as h« was aping back
to Atlanta by tho 9:30 train.
As he was getting ready, Sam said
to Dr. Hoyt: “Dr. hasn’t you got an
old coat you’d give me.” The “old
human nature” of the colored man
came back to him, and he forgot that
he was a legislator drawing a salary
of $4 per day. Dr. Hoyt was pleased
to hear him ask the question, as he
had been puzzled to know what to
giv4 him. The doctor looked over
his cast off clothing up stairs, and
found an old coat Sam already had
on two coats. These were rather too
tight. He pulled off one and put on
the coat received, with the oldest one
outside. The outside coat was sev
eral inches shorter than the one giv
en him, but that made no difference
to him. •

Old Sol’s Eye Shut«
A total eclipse of the sun is billed
to take place to-morrow, Jan, 1, and
astronomers all over the country are
making ( arrangements for complete
Observation. The eclipse Will be due
to the passage of the moon between
the earth and the sun, thus cutting
off the sun’s light ’temporarily in
those parts of the earth where the
shadow will move in a straight path
100 miles wide through parts of Cal
ifornia, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and
other Western States and Territories.
At all points lying within this path
the sun will be obscured from - view
tor two minutes. In nearly all other
parts of the country the eclipse will
only be partial, and will nob bb no
ticeable east of a line drawn through
Ogdenburg, N. Y., and New York
