inations, and always believed that tlie princi ple or rule of the party in regard to nomina tions was a wise and salutary on*,, yet, with this distinct and emphatic''repudiation of tliat rule, I shall feel myself at liberty to become a candidate* whenever it suits me or mv friends to do so. That in another canvass I have entire confidence that the Democratic party of the district will do me justice, and more especially that those four thousand friends who reluctantly sacrificed me for what they believed to he the success of the party, will take the first opportunity to repair the in jury which they thus unwillingly inflicted on ine. Had I l*en simply, on this occasion, an independant candidate, the moment that I discovered that the success of the party would have been eudnngered by ray candidacy . 1 would instantly have withdrawn. But I knew that I had been honorably and fairly nominated, according to tite most ap- ! proved nnd long established usages of the party, nnd hence, I could not consistently, I witli self-respect, with what I owed to the party, and with what was due the Conven tion that nominated itc, withdraw in favor of an independent candidate, such as Mr. Sew ard avowedly was. I determined to maintain the usage of the party by remaining a candi date, and if Tor the party, or both-should be defeated, 1 would have the satisfaction of knowing that 1 had acted from principle, and not from passion, impulse or self-interest. There is no intelligent and well-informed man in the District who can doubt, that had Mr. Seward discharged the debt of gratitude which he. owed me for what 1 did for him in 1853, that had he complied with his most solemn promises to be out of the way when 1 desired to run, the consideration for which he received hj’ ilfy retiring in 1853 in his fa vor, when I could have defeated Jtini by a single word, that I could easily have beaftn the American candidate. The. converse of a portion of this pmpnsi- ] tirin is equally true, to wit: That had the j American party run no candidato I could | have beaten Mr. Seward, had the contest been between us alone, as I would unques tionably have received a majority of the American vote, whilst as the nominee of the Democratic party, and Mr. Seward robbed of the argument that the vote for me would bo to elect an American, I should also have received a majority of titer Democratic party. In conclusion I would return my sincere thanks to those who sustained me in the late election ; nnd to those who voted against me. I say in all sincerity, I cherish no unkind feeling towards you. And to Mr. Seward: The election is nmv orrr, and 1 am patientlv waiting the fulfillment of promises Which I am told you made previous to the election to make a certain call online as soon as the election was orrr.
