slight fall of snow at that place on Friday

representative of this class, about ten days
ago stopped-at the Cily Hotel, Registering

house on Drayton street and assumed the
name of Jacques. He was arrested foi the
bill made at the City Hotel, and lodged in jail
hj constable Masterson,-who we learn fonnd
on him some countefeit bills. He appeared
indifferent to his tnisfoitunes and said we
might expect more of the same sort—Santn

The Senate was organized this morning
by calling Hon. Peter Cone, of Bulloch, to
the Chair, J. W. Duncan, of Fulton, acting
as Secretary.
The members elect having been sworn in
by Hon. Joseph Henry Lumpkin, of the Su
preme Court, the Senate proceeded to the
| selection of a President. There were fhree
! nominations—Hon. J. E. Want, of Chatham ;
lion. Then. L. Guerry, iof Rtndolpli, and
( Hot.. IVin. M. Brown, of Marion. Hon. J.
jE. Ward was elected on the first ballot, the
I voter'standing—Ward 59, Guerry 24, Brown

Mr. Ward, on taking his seat as presiding
! officer, delivered the following brief, though
eloquent address :

It is no ordinary honor to be elected, at 1
any time, to the high position you have be
stowed upon me, but to bo called to fill the
i chair, under the present circumstances, fills
, me with an emotion, for which I can find no
, adequate expression ; and it is with a grate
ful heart that 1 return my thanks for your
I kindness. _
i 1 stand for the first time in the Senate
chamber of’ Georgia, and my duties are en-[
tirely new to tne. and, I therefore, gentle- :
men, crave your indulgencCjjWliilo eugaged
in learning to discharge ftuTfunctions of my i
office. In the occupancy of this seat, I shall!
always endeavor to be free from party feel
ing. and personal feeling, end all kinds of
j feeling not consistent with the responsibilities
of my position, and shall always be guided
, by a desire of promoting the honor and in
terest of tny State. 1 shall fill the office as
a Senator, and as such, administer its rules
and regulations. I .shall know no section,
no locality, no party; but the whole and tin
divid State. And while I trust that 1 shall
not be insensible and recreant io party obli
■gations, I shall never swerve from the rigid
enforcement of what duty requires of me.
When this hammer shall fall for the last time,
I shall be Satisfied if my countrymen say,
“ Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

of that fact—Georgia is a great State—great’
in her soil—great in her climate—great in

ments, sink it should be a matter of pride
; with us that we make her equally great in
her educational advantages. Let us establish
such a school system that any man * can at
tain anyVdncation that he desires.
Let us also, gentlemen, endeavor to soften,
by constant courtesy, the asperities of party
feeliug and let every act be for the promotion
of the interest of the State. I again repeat
to von my sincere thanks.

Milledgeville is full of all sorts of people—
legislators, office seekers and pleasure seek
ers. The last named have certainly come to
the wrong shop—for the hotels and boarding
houses are crammed to death. Office seekers
are ss plenty as black-berries. 1 have nev
er belore seen so large a number of gentlemen
anxious to serve their country. ■
The Governor elect, and family reached
here yesterday afternoon, and are quartered
at the Executive Mansion. I learn that our
friend. Major Steeleof the Atlanta lotelligcn
cer, is one cf the Secretaries to the Execu
tive Department; ~
Grief knits two hearts in closer bonds than
happiness ever can ; and common sufferings
are far stronger links than common joys.
