The Herald of the 19th instant, n)b
A terrible chapter of crinie w given to
day’s paper. The murder of Vecent in
William street > the homicide of a German
grocer in SeveWeenth street; the sffray be
tween two negroes in West Broadway, and
the stabbing of one ofthem beyond all hope of
recovery; and the precarious condition of
young Hamilton, who was shot in Canal
street, form the incidents and present a fear
ful picture of life in the metroplis.

STATE AID DEFEATED.
Tlio Bill iVPtlic House of Representatives,
asking the credit of the State to build cer
tain Railroads was debated Tor four days
during the past week. It was ably discuss
ed by Messrs Underwood, Lewis of Hancock
Smith of Towns, Hardeman and others, in
favor of, and by Messrs. Bighorn, Kenan,
Gordon, Milledgc and others, against the
bill.
On Saturday afternoon Mr. Irwin of
Wilkes mbvod to lay the bill on the table for
the balance of.the session. His motion pre
vailed ty a rote of 82 yeas 52 nays. Thus
lias this mach agitated subjeect been disposed
of by the present Legislature. This result
was undoubtedly brought about by the pe
culiar condition of the money market. The
credit of the State is already pledged to the
amount of a million of dotlars in favor of the
Main Trunk and Brunswick Roads when they
shall comply with the conditions of their
charter, and prudent men that were in favor
of State aid in ordinary times, feared that if
another large amont of State Bonds ,wre
thrown upon the (market in these crititical
times it would injure the credit of the State.
We have little doubt that a majority of this
legislature in ’ordinary times would be
very liberal towards jddicious Railroad enter
prises.
We have not space to particularise the
speeches, or tbe points of the getlemen who
ao ably and elquently addressed tbe House
on this bill.— Prut. ‘ ‘‘ . m ,

have aeted wisely and patriotical

ple whom they represent; and each legislator
must be prepared to be held accountable for
his action. byjiis Constituency, at home.—
The bill was only scotched on Saturday,
this morning it was killed by a de
cisive final blow. On Saturday night a
large tinniber of lobbp iflemberirgot leave of
absence for the ballance of the session; still
there was a quorum left. But this morning
there was a general “ scatterlaphittication”
of them—an adjournment, tine die, of that

GEORGIA, TeMkir County.
Wc, the Grand Jury, sworn,Chosen and selected
for tiie County of Telfair, in concluding our labors,
respectfully present the following as our general
preu-utments. We have not been unmindful of the
many arduous duties devolving on us, and which we
wi re so forcibly reminded, in the dear and cogent
charge of his Honor, on the opening of this Court.—
We regret that our country containsao many viola
t-rs Os the Pei ai Laws, but yet, we are somewhat
consoled, by the knowledge that there is no very
heinous offences committed, still we hope that by a
strict enforcement of the laws, offences will rapidly
disappear from our midst.
\\ hilst we are opposed in principle to peddling in
our country, still as the law recognizes It, we must
bow with submission ta4t, and we hereby recom
mend to the Inferior Court to reduce the tax to
$lO6, as the present amount required es tbeiu
amounts to almost a prohibition, which we think is
contrary to the intention or policy of the law.
We are sorry to present the bad condition of the
roads, and request the proper authority to look into
this matter as soon as possible and sfford immediate
relief, as it is a reflection on Tdfair County to allow
such roads in its limits.
We also recommend that the patrol laws be strict
ly and rigidly enforced, as our community is subject
to very many ills in consequence of nn almost aban
don incut of the law. Slave* are permitted to roam
at large, meet together and fight, setting a bad exam
file to tbe balance, and tbe owner thereby sustaining
oss; for our protection, we think the law should
be strictly .enforced.
In tiding leave of his Honor, Judge Love, we feel
under many obligations to him for the attention to
business he has evinced at this term and for kindness
to this body.
To out Solicitor General, Col. Sbeftall we feel
sincerely tbaukfui for his kindness to this body, snd
hereby tender him our thanks, not ouly for his kind
ness, but devotion to business.
We request the Solicitor General to move th 1
