Failure,”
The Londoti Time. y> So much hat
been said about this Niagtra.and such exag
gerated rumors have been afloat respecting
her general capacity as a war steamer, that
many of our readers may be surprised to
learn that as a war steamer she is almost a to
tal failure. There have been bad bargains
out of our own dock-yards, Ileaven knows,
but they have never yet gone so far as to pro
duce a wall-sided frigato of almost double
the tonnage of a line-of-battle ship, yet only
capable of carrying twelve guns on her Rpar
deck and none at all ou her lower. Any
other screw vessel of the same size as the
Niagara should be well fitted for carrying at
least otic hundred of the heaviest ordinance]
used in warfare. Her share of tho cable is
admirably well distributed throughout her
entire length, and tbui, of course .any chance
of undue strain in a heavy sea is in a great
measure obviated. Still, strange to say,
though those on board asftert that she is a
much stronger vessel than tho Agamemnon,
her decks appe ir to have given down under
the pressure of the enormous coils to a much
greater extent than-is perceptible on board
the latter.”

Florida Railroad Company.—We are
gratified to learn from a gentleman of this
place who has just returned direct from Fer
nandina that tlip Florida Railroad Company
have been relieved of their, difficulties and
embarrassments, and that work will now go
forward with renewed energy. We are truly
glad to hear it. We believe that the grading
on the entire line is already completed, with
the exception of eleven miles.and the carfare
now running fron Fernandina to Gainesville
—a distance of some seventy-five or eighty
miles. Npw the empany have ample means to
take their iron out of bond, and push the work
along, we shall look forward to the completion
of the enterprise at an early day.— Florida

No Dissension in the Cabinet.—The
organs of the Opposition represent the Cabi
net in a state of feud,- approaching even to
dissolution. The story goes of a rupture be
tween the Secretary of War and the Secretary
of the Treasury, and of a want of harmony
among other members of the Administration.
In the Union, of yesterday, wo find the
most distinct contradiction of the canard.—
Thisisthe assurance of the official organ :
“We stated some time ago that the Pres
ident entertained entire and implicit con
fidenec in each and every member of bis Ca
binet; we cau add now, in response to this
new class of rumors which have had a more
recent invention, that the utmost good feeling
exists between all the members of the Cabin
et ; and if any two of them arc on terms more
cordial then the rest, they happen to be the
very gentlemen whom this latest and fresh
est rumor announces to be at dagger’s
drpw!’’
The Thirty-Firth Congress closed its
session Monday—a shorter one by about two
months than the average length of first ses
sions has been for many 3 ears post. Notwtli
standing this unusual brevity, says the. Intel
ligencer, it appears by a careful examination
into the facts that the House of Representa
tives lias sat more hours and passed a greater
number of bills (luring the present session
than it has during any, even the longest of
any previous Ions; session. The Appropria
tion bills were all p isscd and signed by the
Presi lent. ‘• ’
The Two-llkaubd Girl.—The St. Lou
is Deim cr it says:
“She is the embodin e.it of all that is ex
traordinary and strange, having two finely
formed beads, very intelligent, and of a live
ly and amiable disposition. She sings very
pretily and with both her mouths, talks and
walks well, and always interests her visitors
to a great degree. There is no clianco of a
doubt but that she is the greatest enriosity
ever witnessed, and should, by all means, be
seen by everybody.”
Sale of Steamships.—The steamships
Washington and Herman, of the Bremen
line, with all their furniture, table ware, mir
rors; &.c., were sold nt auction in New York
on Thursday, for 850,000. These fine steam
ships wore built ten j-ears sinee at a cost of
half a million dollars each.
The Mormons were all leaving the valley
and going to a place called l’rovcrst, forty
miles from Salt Ijnke City, which it is said
they intend fortifying, to avoid furter moles
tation.
