KNO IN BBS'S OfWCR, &. &, I
Mr. EimToH !-~I regret & find that lam
misunderstood in my communication to- the
Hoard of Directors of the Atlantic* A Gulf
Railroad Company, ia reply to their enquiry
relative to the comparative practicability of
the lines surveyed by me through the county
tis Lowndes, and *“{* misunderstanding
has giyon”* rise to dissensions and discussions
among the south-west, calculated to be inju
rious to the interest o£,thc Main Trunk,—
y/v typographical error in printing No. 1 for
’ No. 2, has caused all the difficulty, and I re :
gret to perceive that the Georgian, in its is
sue of to-day, in its attempt to rectify repeats
the erroh ! *
Since my return from the location of the
line, a priuted copy of my report, iu pam
phlet form, lias been handed to me which I
find correct in every respect. As the pam
phlet may not reach all interested immedi
ately, and ill Order that there may be no fur
ther mistake in this matter, I beg leave to
Btate, that No. one represents the Troupville
line; No. two the line of the Brunswick Road ;
nnd No. llixet the Mineral Spring line. My
meaning will be better understood by substi
ting words for figures, and I have therefore
to Say in explanation, thpt the Troupville
-line is the shortest, being one hundred and
■one miles and 2,393 feet long, but is the most
difficult and expensive line; and that the
Brunswick line, it one hundred and two
miles and 4,469 Ifeet long, is shorter by 2,873
feet, or a little over half a mile than tbe
Mineral Spring line, and less expensive in
our estimatie than the same line by only
twenty-three thonsaud two hundred and
eighty-seven dollars, (823,287). These
small advantages of the Brunswick line over
the Mineral Spring line, will in my opinion
be more than counterbalanced by less curva
ture and higher grades on the latter than on
the former. Thp Mineral Spring line labors
under the disadvantage of being only an ex
perimental line; whilst the Brunswick line
enjoys all of the advantages of a located
line. When the Mineral Spring line shall
be located it will be found the least expen
sive of the two.
In my report, I state that the Withla
coochee will be crossed by a bridge of seven
hundred feet, including trestle work, on the
Mineral Spring line. I repeat this statement
here in order to correct an opinion advanced
by some, that the crossing at this point will
require a bridge of one. mile in length.
Very respectfully, yours,
‘•* E. L. 11k riot, ,
Chief Engineer.
THE MAIN THUNK BA‘LEOAO.
Our cotemporary of tbe Tronpyille Enter
prise ,in its issue oil the 26th ultimo, devotes
nearly a column to the dissection of our prop
osition to build thirty miles of the Main
Trunk Railroad in the direction of Tliomaa
vil.e from this place. He thinks it very ab
surd for onr people to propose such a thing,
and presumes the directors much too shrewd
to permit us to build, at our own expense,
nearly one fourth the whole length of the
road, when there are ell of seen i parties in
interest!
We have not the slightes objection to tbe
continuation of the work at the other end,
provided the citizens of Lowndes and Thom
as will consent to build their proportionate
part of thetbad, presuming the subscriptions
of Savannah and the S. A. & Gulf Railroad
Company, together with a corresponding por
tion of the States subscription, are sufficient
to construct the road into Lowndes county. —
Our only fear is (judging from the little in
terest they have appeared to take in the mat
ter up to this period,) thnt the citizens along
tho line of the (oad will fail to perform their
part in the great work before us, especially
if subscriptions at thisend are to bo appro
priated to building the Eastern portion of
the road.
• We desire the road completed gt tho ear
liest possible pc.riod, and believe tbe most
practicable way by which it can be effected
is for tbe citizens of each couuty to organize
themselves into separate companies, and
take as large a contract as they believe them
selves able to perform, regardless of whether
they are agreeing to do more or less than
their part of the work. If this plan is adop
ted the citizens of Decatur and Thomas coun
ties alone can prepare sixty miles of the
road for the reception of the iron, and cer
tainly it would be to their interest to do it
without a mometn’s unnessary delay.
We do cincerely hope and pray that the
!>eople along the line of the road, who are so
argely “interested in its speedy construction,
will arouse from their injudicious slumbers,
and determine to address themselves actively
to tbe important business in hand, and de
sire not a moment’s repose until the entire
line of the road is under contract, from the
initial point to Bainbridge, and its early com
pletion guaranteed beyond the possibility of
a doubt.— Bainbridge Argus.

In returning from the scene of the Corner
Stone Ceremonials, the horses attached to a

a steep bank w hich divides the Avenue from

The St. Louis Republican says Mr. Staler,
editor of the Lexingtep f Missouri) Expositor
wet killed oif board Hie steamer A. B.
Chambers, in an affray With a gambler named
Clark. It seems that Mr. Staler and Clark
had been playing cards on board the boat,
and Stofer bad won a portion of Clark’s
money; after which, he (Stofer) declined
playing more. Clark was anxious to get .his
money back, and told Stofer so using threa
tening language towards his adversary at the
table. To avoid a quarrel, Stofer left the
table and went out opon the guard of the boat
near the barber shop. Clark followed, and
asked Stofer again if he wps going to contin
ue the game, telling him that if he did not he
would kill him then and there. Stofer replied
that he would play no more; whereupon Clark
presented a pistol to his udversary’s head
nnd fired. The shot took effect in Stofer’s
temple, and he expired instantly.
Ths Proposed Territory of Naveda.
It was apparrent that a very strong feel
ing prevailed in Congress, before its recent
adjournment, in favor of creating some pro
visional form of government, either by the
grant of a territorial act or otherwise, for tho
settlers iu Carson valley; but the pressure of
business during the last few weeks of iiie
session prevented any action on the subject.
It will doubtless be considered early next
session, and some proper law be passed that
will meet the demands of the settlers in this
beautiful valley.— Washington Union.
