Ml. KDtTOiIn a cß*Kioicnti which
npprored in your pip* of woek by “ A
Citizen Interested,” di*citssfe§i * 0 pohcy of
the board of director, of the Atlantic and
Gulf Road id locating tbe Hne thereof npon
the Mineral Spring rente, it was pertinently
remarked , that this Hne would force a con
nection With the Florida Road extending
eastward from ; Tallahassee to Monticelle,
Florida. It was said this object upon the
part of the directors and engineer waa of pri
mary consideration. This Staten ent, it is
now manifest was well founded. The Con
stitution of the Stateof Florida I believe re
quires ns a pre-requisite to the granting of a
charter, that previous notice should be given.
The following notiee has therefore been pub
lished for such purpose :
“At the- next meeting of the Legislature
of Florida, application will be made for a
charter for a Railroad to run from some point
of tie Georgia line between Thomasville and
Groovervilie to New Pert, with privilege of
extension to deep water in the Spanish Hole.”
J. M'Bride, 8. B. Richardson,
Jas. Ormond, Wm. M'Naught,
R. A. Bradhnm, R. A. Gouge,
R. B. Forbes, Dan’l Ladd,
Berrien Oliver.
The line of Road proposed by this appli
cation wotfld run from New Port to Monticel
lo and from thence to the Georgia line not
far distant from Groovervilie, thence to the
Atlantic and Golf Road, which from Monti
celto would require a Road only about twen
ty miles long. It will be remembered that
a connection with Monticello reaches the
Road leading to Tallahassee, and New Port
seeks a like connection at Montieello. Now
I ask if any sane mind can doubt the object
and vie. sos Mr Hcriot. As soon as the loca
tion of the G. R. R. is made public—
the notice above inserted appears—can any
intelligent observer doubt that the line was
agreed upon in furtherance of an evidently
preconcerted arrangement to accommodate
this Florida interest! May I not enquire—
can this be done without an utter disregard
of the rights and interests of the people of
Southern Georgia!
The State of Georgia embarked in this
enterprise to perfect her railroad system. —
It Was a grand and benificent object—near
ly one-tliird of her vast territory lay unim
proved and undeveloped. Her Legislators
saw this beautiful region in one unbroken
plain lying upon her Southern and South-
Western borders between the Altamaha and
Chattahoochee riveri a w aste
without the’ aid of the Government. The
aid was generously given—looking forward
to a teeming industrious population who
should occupy this vast domain to frectify
and fertilise it, that the trensnres of its hid
den wealth might be developed and add
to her growing greatness and magnificence.
Georgia looked to an increase of her politi
cal strength by adding largely to her popula
tion. She was also mindful of her commerce.
Savannah and Brunswick standing upon the
sea-board, sister cities, and should be hand
maids to each other, were designed to be
equally bene.fitted and to be the entrepots of
the varied products and commodities of this
futfire empire. Who can look at this picture
without responding with patriotic pride to
the wise/policy of the State? But alas!—
The blow is about to be stricken. The vam
pire of avarice is about to suck out the life
blood of the people of Georgia and leave a
blight upon the bosom of the State. This
must not be so. The voice that emenated
from the sovereign people and spoke into ex
istence this grand undertaking is potent to
day, will strangle this demon. Why build a
Railroad along the Florida line? For wbat
purpose? No rational and intelligent an
swer can be furnished. And what becomes
of Thomasville ? the beautiful and flourish
ing town that presents itself as the pride and
glory of Southern Georgia. She too is to be
despoiled by a Railroad connection with Flor
ida eastward bf her. The capital and enter
prise of her merchants is to be seriously af
fected. Her flourishing schools are to lose
much of their present patronage. The pri
vate dwellings of the citizens are to be great
ly depreciated in value.’ The honest me
ctanics whose industry has reared buildings
for sale is to be ruined by the unjust aud un
wise policy of the directors and engineer of
the A. &.. G. ft. R. Years my elapse before
the Road reaches Thomasville and Bain
bridge (and a competing town may be built)
to tbeir.injury.
An auswer is called for from the Directors.
Shall Florida be made the recipient of the
intended beneficence of Georgia to her own
people. * The people have waited patiently
under the threatened injury to their rights
and interests. To wait much longer would
be criminal upon their part. If their voice
should be unheeded, they should meet in
their primary assemblies and determine what
course should be pnrsued for tbeir protection.
It is hoped they will be spared the necessity
of this. The excitement is already great
and can only be allayed by the directors
yielding to tlieir just demands. Gboruia.

Agreeable to previous notice, a respectable
portion of the citizent Msetabled this day to
take iDto consideration suitable measures to
prevent the severing of our county as con
templated by a portion of our citizens in snd
shout Mill Town. When on motion, Jambs
Griffin Sr., waa called to the chair, and R.
P. Hutchinson requested to act as secretary.
Mr. H. T. Peeples being called upon, ex
plained the object of the meeting in a brief
but very appropriate manner, and then beg
ged leave to offer the following preamble and
resolutions, which were unanimously adopt*
ed:
Whereas, there is a project now being set
on foot to form a now county out of tbe coun
ties of Berrien, Clinch and Lowndes, making
Mill Town, now in the county of Berrien, tbe
county-site of said new county, thereby dis
figuring our county, cutting off a large por
tion of our most valuable citizens, depriving
us in our very infancy of their aid in erect
ing suitable public buildings and the discharge
of county debts already contracted, and not
greatly to their convenience, that portion of
the county being now nearer to the court
bouse than any other part of the county.
Thei fore it it Retolved, By this meeting,
that we oppose with man'y firmneis the grant
ing of any portion of Berrien county for
the object contemplated ■> iu the foregoing
portion of this preamble.
And it it further Retolved, That a com
mittee of three from each district be appoint
ed by the chair, to secure as large a number
of petitioners outside of the contemplated
bouuds of the said new county as possible,
to send up to tbe next Legislature, and that
a committee of one from each district also
be appointed to visit the territory embraced
in the new county, as there are some in said
bounds who prefer remaining in Berrien
county.
And be it further Retolved, That a com
mittee of tlirrobe appointed by the chair to
wait on our Representative, and call upon
him to meet the citizens of this county in
convention, to be assembled at Nashville, on
the first Tuesday in August next, to Express
his views on the bew county question now
being agitated through our county ; and in
the event it should not be convenient to meet
the citizens of this county in convention,
that he be called upon to express himself by
letter, to be laid before the said convention,
in accordance with the second resolution.
The chair then proceeded to appoint the
following named gentlemen on the several
committees, as herein described :
For 1145th District—D. G. Hutchinson,
W. J. Mabry, Josiah Parrish.
For 1156th District—H. 11. Lovett, J. D.
Handcock, B. F. Lindsey.
For 1147th District—Benj, Baker, Iley
Easters, D. Willis.
For 518th District—C. Tison, W. W.
Peyton, W,Tison.
For 1157th District—James F. Goodman,
James Griffin, Sr., A. P. Patterson.
For 1148th District—H. Gaskins, M. G.
Sutton, N. R. Watson.
Committee to visit the territory to bo cut
off—J. M. Futcb, J. F. Goodman, W. W.
Peyton, M. G. Sutton, Iley Easters, H. H.
Lovett, D. G Hutchinson.
Committee to wait npon our Representa
tive—Owen Smith, David G. Hutchinson,
Jesse L. Peeples. .1 • y
Further moved, that the Editors of the
Wire-Grass Reporter, Southern Enterprise,
and Southern Georgia Watchman bo request
ed to publish these proceedings.
The meeting then adjourned until the first
Tuesday in August next.

JL P. Hutchinson, Secretary.

The lit 9 Governor Troup.
We learn that a biography of this distin
guished Georgian is uow in course of prepar
ation by a member of the Savannah Bar,
who is abundantly competent to the task.
The Southern University.
At the convention of Bishops assembled at
Bersheba Springs on the 3d instant, Sewa
nce, in Franklin county, Tennessee, was
confirmed as the location for the Southern
University. The much vexed question is now
permanently settled.
The Crops.
The crops of corn and cotton in this
county, from the present prospeet, will be
just as good as the land can make them. It
has been seasonable nil the summer, and the
rains still continue. The cropson grey land
may be injured by excessive rains, but the
red land crops are luxuriating in the abun
dance of moisture.— Lumpkin Palladium.
Decimal Currency.
It is stated that an interesting report has
been recoived by the Treasury Department
from Professor Alexander, “flow in England,
engaged in endeavoring to secure a uniform
currency for the two countries, as authorized
by the last Congress. Ho says the decimal
currency will be readily agreed upon by the
Commissioners.
Diseased Beet.
We learn, from good authority, that dis
eased dried beef has been, within the last
twenty-four hours, offered for sale in our mar
ket, by parties from the country. Our infor
mant saw a tongue with one of these lots of
beef, which was black from disease, and there
can be no doubt that this species of meat is
daily offered to our citizens. We trust that the
proper officers will see that this evil is reme
died without delay. In the meantime, we ad
vise our readers to beware of dried beef.—
Savannah Newt.
We understand through a private letter
from Fernandina, that the Florida Railroad
company has transferred its entire interest
in the road to a company in New York, con
sisting of George Law,Vanderbilt Bud others j
all millionaires; and that they ere about to
establish -an Atlantic and Golf line of
steamers, constructed with all modern im
provements, aad will hare the whole under
their own control.
It is expected that the work oa the road
win progress rapidly, and that the whole will
be in foil operation by the first of April next. 1
