It would appear from the following ex
tracts that the Southern people are getting a
httle sharper than fortferiy, knd donot think
it necessary any longer to confine themselves
to cotton, rice and tobacco in theii export
trade, to balance the enormous accounts for
goods annuslly purchased from tho North.—
They have borrowed so idea from Got.
Brown, and think k not necessary that ac
counts current should bo always exactly bal
anced, but if there ia a surplus iu their favor,
so much the better.
The Fruit and V|sobtablb Trade,—
We spoke s few. days since (says the Savan
nah Newt) of the shipments North, from this
port, of apples and vegetables of various
kinds, iu considerable quantities. We have,
also, mentioned the feet, more than once,
that Urge numbers of watermelons bad been
sent forward. These last are still going for
ward, the steamships to New York, on
Saturday, carrying more than three thousand,
We also noticed large quantities of peaches,
from thfeorebard of Mr. Moses, of Columbus.
In addiflon to being several weeks earlier, the
Southern peaches are superior in flavor to
those grown at the North, and the demand ‘
for them iu New York ia not only very great
now, but will continue, even after the Nor
thern peacbea come into market.
Northrrn Trade Coming Sooth.—Pass- .
ingthe store of Dr. J. Dennis, on yesterday, we
noticed a number of boxes, ready, for ship
ment to Charleston and New York. It
struck us as anew field for Southern trade,
and we stopped to enquire what it meant.
The Doctor, with his good-humored air, re
plied that lie Was merely filling a few orders
fur the “ Compound Extract of Sarsaparilla,”
which the people North are just beginning
to appreciate. Said he —“ Some of the ven
ders of the Sarsaparilla Compounds supply
the Southern trade with sweetened wiiter,
while the more knowing ones there send
South fora genuine article.— Augusta Dit

A correspondent of the Savannah Geor
gian furnishes the following details of a rob
bery of the Sheriff of Emannel county, on
Sunday night, the 18th inst.
R. C. Sheriff of Emanuel coun
ty, being a single man, and having no home,
concluded his office in Swainsboro not
safe, aud deposited at his father’s (Neadan
Briant’s) house, in a small valise, 81,380 in
raouey, and notes and other valuable papers.
In that county everybody is considered
honest , consequently but little care was give to
its safety, and it wg# carelessly left in a
room on Sunday night where no persoD
slept, aud next morning (Monday) the valise
was found by the fence about half a mile from
the house, cut open and all the money and
papers gone, among which was his license to
get married. After a search for tracks they
were found to be those of two persons which
showed they pulled off their shoes before get
ting to the house.
Next morning two young men who were in
the neighborhood that night, crape to help
measurPtracks, &c., and npon examii ation
were found to be the suspicious persons, their
(racks were measured bare footed and with
shoes, and each corresponded exactly. The
circumstances were so strong against them
that a warrant waa procured, they were ar
rested, and upon trial (though they proved
by irrefragable evidence they were in bed at a
neighbor’s house that night at midnight, and
were there next morning,)—they were sent
to jail, where they now await their trial at
the next superior court iu that connty. The
names of the young men in jail are Benjamin
E. Griffin and Robert G. Hampton. Both
young men exhibit marks and signs of intel
ligence.

Dublin, July 25th, 1858.
Messrs. Editors:—With your permis
sion I would like to call the attention of
some of yonr readers to “ Old Laurens.”—
I have noticed, of late, the reports from all
sections of Georgia, relative to the corn and
cotton crops, but so far nothing from Lau
rens county, and for fear she may “ piue
away in her neglected solitude,” I deem it
proper she should be represented. The
crops are doing well, and present appearan
ces would seem to indicate a more than ordi
nary yield of Both corn and cotton. The cot
ton has not been troubled with tho rust, and
corn is better than has ever been known in
this county. In fact, 1 do not believe the
corn and cdtton crops can be surpassed by
any in the State. A visit to some of the ex
tensive plantations near our flourishing little
town, fully convinced me of the feet. And
here I cannot omit calling your attention to
the plantation oi our mutual friend Samuel
Yopp, Esq. If you have never visited -his
premises you could not help being struck
with everything that characterises the trae
Southern planter. A ride through his ex
tensive farm not only convinced us of his
Unsurpassed skill as a farmer, but a call to
hia tciae cellar shewed to us he had not neg
lected some of the native products of our
clime. In company with one of the medical
staff, we were kindly invited by our hospita
ble friend, to test its purity. Having no oth
er “ test tubes” than those which nature bad
given us, we drank and could not help but
pronounce it superior to anything we had
ever seen, either foreign or domestic.
A* hurried visit to his vineyard and exten
sive orchard convinced ns of their flourishing
condition, and proved that we have only to
use the advantages we have, to be indepen
dent of all the world, so far as delightful
fruit is concerned. We feel that too much
be said relative to our enterprising
neighbor, and wo hope the people wiß not
only take him as an example, but emulate
his zeal, and that the day is not far distant
when Southfern people will rely more upon
their own resources. We could say much
more, but we fear we hare already occupied
too much of your spaee. J.L.Q.
