THE raAZEB RIVKB GOLD. 7
Uncle Sam certainly missed a profitable I
speculation when be refufea; to buy out the
interest of the British Hudson s Bay lur i
Company. After the peltry of the country j
was exhausted the charter was considered j
valueless to the compafty, and after the Cri
mean war broke out, the British government,
considering the territory at the mercy of the
Russians, ready to part with it; rtfld tho
charter of the one and the national jurisdic
uoQ.of tho might have beqn had for a
song—Rumor said the whole country was of
fered to'our government about tho time of
the Crimean war for some three or five mill
ions of Dollars. Since then vast treasures
of coal havo been discovered ou Van Con
vert island (a large .island lying iu tho Pa
cific) and fabulous quantities of gold are
found deposited in the streams on the inai*
land.* Frazer’s river has been, thus far, moßt ►
extensively developed, ahd found to be most
plentifully supplied. Seveu hundred dol
lars worth of gold is said to have been gath
ered by one hand in a single day. That is
making money fast. Twenty-five dollars a
day is a comaion work. All T’alifornia
is agog in consequence, and thousands aro
flocking from that State to this new El Do
rado. California gold mines are no whore
under the excitement. We make the follow
ing extracts from the San Francisco Bulle
tin of the 2d July :
* The Gold Fever in Calilor*for~~*- -
As during the fortnight previous, tho last
fifteen days have been occupied almost cx- ’
clusivdy by the Frazer river matters. Tho
new gold miues at the North have been hi
everybody’s mind and m everybody’s mouth.
The press of the entire State has been almost
monopolised by accounts- and letters from
there ; and every lino on tho subject has been
seized and read with the utmost avidity.
The exodus from California of emigrants tor
that region has continued unabated. Steam
ers and sailing vessels —some of the former of
the largest been called into re
quisition to aceoinniodato the travel. Owing
to tlifc carelessness or design of the masters of
vessels in uot entering tho full number of the
passengers on the custom-house books, it is
impossible to get at-tlie exact number of
those who have left San Frdncisco since the
breaking out of the excitement, for tho new
gold region; bat it is variously estimated at
from fifteen thousand to eighteen thousand
persons, all adult males. As yet, there seems
to be no falling off in tho number who are leav
ing. The interior townsare being deserted and
operations iu parts of our mining country will
for a time cease. Property in various pints
of California has necessarily depreciated. In
many places the depreciation is unreasonably
great; and perhaps a better time for investing
money profitably in property in California
never existed than at present. Mining claims,
paying splendidly, and real estate, havo been
sold by individuals afflicted with the “Frazer
river fever,” at less thau half of their real
value.
The town of Victoria, on Vancouver Island,
has sprung rapidly into importance. Great
speculations have been made in real estate.
Lots winch a few months ago were sold
by the Hudson’s Bay Company at fifty dollars
are now selling at over one thousand dollars.
” Farther by tho Hose* Taylor.
The Frazer river excitement continues un
abated. The reports of tho richness of the
diggingfinre almost fabulous. One letter wri
ter says that the yield of his first day’s work
was S7OO. Victoria was crowded with Amer
icans. Building lots were held os high ns
520.000. The Hudson’s Bay Company were
buying gold dust at sls per ounce.
The Indians bad begun to commit depreda
tions upon the emigrants —A party of ten
emigrants had been attacked and six persons
killed. Twenty-two canoes, filled with In
dian wnrriors, were passed going into Victoria,
and 200 more were on their way. It was fear
ed the mining regions would 6oon ho over-run
by them, and that an indiscriminate massacre
would follow.
Fourteen steam and sailing vessels had
left San Francisco since tho 20th June for
Frazor river.
* THAT’S THE WAT.
We were of tlie opinion, at the time ol
the Toney excitement at Boston, when the
Bostonians resisted tho fugitive slave law
and did their best to prevent its being carried
out, that if the expenses of that shameful
transaction had afterwards been collected
out of the debts due to Massachusetts by the
Southern people, it would have cured tho
abolition disease at onee, and put Massachu
setts in a sound and .healthy state on that
subject. We think so yet. Thcro is noth
ing like a “ twitch of the pocket nerve” to
eure wonton wickedness orfolly. The Tcx
iaus, we see, are taking the bull by the horns,
and though laic, wo hope it may have a
good effect. Tho Legislature of that State,
at its last session passed, the following act:
” Section 1. Bo it enacted by tlie Legis
lature of the State of Texas, that tho fol
lowing sum be, and they are hereby appro
priated for the use and support of the State
penitentiary, for tho years 1858 and JLSS9. —
[After nanting the various items, tho law
makes this further provisionj: For purchas
ing and putting up additional machinery,
slß*ooo, provided that, no part of the same
shall be expended in the State of Massachu
setts, ,f nor for .machinery manufactured in
said State.”

The people in the southern counties of tho
State were still busied with hunting out and
hanging the members afaband of banditti that
has long infested that region, and committed
nirihberless murders and robberies. These
miscreants are principally Mexicans, headed
by a famous American desperado, called Jack
Powers. Seven have alrcndy been captur

The Oregon Indiana for Peace.
Tho Superintendent of Indian affairs in
Oregon suggests to the government that the
troops destined to operate against tho ra
dians in that Territory bo withdrawn at onco,
and {filial our true policy is to send a peace
maker among them to redeem the promises
made of presents of agricultural implements,
Ac. The President is assured that tho pres
ent hostile position of tho Indians is not ow
ing to the non-ratification of treaties made
by them, but proceeds from other causes, the
principal one of which is their fear of being
driven from their homes, and of the other
tribes from the Pacific coast being forced up
*on them. They promise to create no further
difficulty if the troops aro withdrawn and
their rights respected. The number of In
dians in Oregon and Washington Territories
is said to be greatly exaggerated by partios
interested in army speculations.
Extensive Loss by Fire.
The burning of the baggage and mail-car
on the New York Central Railroad, on Sat
urday last, involved a less estimated at from
$25,000 to $50,000. Many of the trunks had
large sums of money in them A lump of
melted gold was found near the car, worth
nearly a hundred dollars. An old lady and
gentleman were on their way to California,
and every thing that belonged to them was
in their trunks, which were destroyed. As
soon as tho old lady hoard that her* baggage
was destroyed, she wept like a child. An
other young man was also 011 his way to Cal
ifornia, with a quantity of! valuable articles,
including watches, money, jewekyC’&c.,
which were also destroyed. A lady living
in Maine los three large trunks filled with
valuable clothing. The fire is supposed to
have originated from a spark from the loco
motive.

The “ Log Cabin,” so famous in political
history, has gone at last! It was the residence
of General Harrison, at North Bend, about
fifteen miles below Cincinnati, when he was
nominated for President, and was made fa
mous by a thousand songs in the campaign
of 18-10. It took fire and was totally con
sumed on Sunday morning last. It was oc
cupied by. Col. Wm. H. H. Taylor, (who
married a daughter of .General Harrison) and
family, and it was stated that such was the
rapid progress of the fire, and so late its
discovery, that the members of the household
barely escaped iu their night clothes.— Sac.
