The East India Company.— On the’

hereafter will be managed by the India

Donati’s Comet.— This Comet was seen
with the Tmfgtrtey era bout 8-o’clock onKtm
day cvenrqg, sth inst., at Cambridge Uni
versity, Mass. It is near the North-west ho
rizon, and appears as a star of the second or

A female correspondent of-a St. Louis pa
per spedkw of a sight she saw lately that
made her smack her lips. It seems a pity
that the ladies in that city have to smack’
their own lips. In this town, the “ fellows”
are always ready to save thorn that trouble.
New York, Sept. 6— Removal of the Af
rican*. —The Washington correspondent of
the New York Herald says that the Frigate
Niagara is ordered to proceed immediately
to Charleston to carry back the Africans ta
ken by the Dolphin. Commodore Chauncey
goes in command.
A Bnake Story. —Awyitcrin thoTroup
ville Watchman says that ho saw a fight be
tween a king-snake and a rattle-snake, the
latter being the largest, hut the former com
ing off victorious. After killing his antago
nist, he swallowed him and crawled off, ap
parently, no larger than at first,
A Goorgi.Fhierchant, who arrived in New
York city a few dayß ago to purchase goods,
was found on Tuesday, night lying on the
sidewalk, near- tho Fulton ferry, stupified
and senseless from tho effects of drugged
liqnor which some designing rascals had in
duced, him to imbibe. .The sum of $1,600
was found safe in his pockets.
Remarkable Phenomenon.— Rev. Jo
seph R. Walker inform? the editor of the
Christian Aifuocate- of Memphis, that in
Tipton counties, Tennessee, the
white oak trees are bearing on the outside of
the acorn bull, something in tho shape of
wheat, upon which the hogs aro feeding and
thriving finely.
WeJeajn from Tampa, says the Wakulla
Times, that considerable excitement exists
there, on account of suspicions being enter
tained that tho death of Dr. Brauch had
been caused by -poison, administered by some
person who liad been under the ban of the
Vigilance Committee. The Committee bad
arrested two, .after considerable resistance,
(during which one was shot in the arm,) and
banded them over to the civil authorities.
Speaking of the immense crowd of stran
gers now flocking to New York the Express
6ays:
The travel, city-ward, just now, is iin
mense. Five hundred passengers arrived from
Newport on Thursday, in tho Fall River
boat. The St. Nicholas has 900 guests—the
New York Hotel is so full that it is compell
ed to colonize its lodgers, and nearly all the
first elites Hotels arc equally thronged.
Wednesday nijrlit, more people slept, or
tried to sleep in New York, than we liavo
lind here for years. Beds were at a premi
um everywhere.
Increased Mail Facilities with Florida.
We publish with pleasure the following in
formation of an important improvement in
our communications with Florida :
Washington, September 1,185S. — I am
gratified in being able to inform you that the
Postmaster General has authorized a daily
mail, by steam boats, between Charleston and
Fejuandina. and a daily mail by four-horse
post conches, between Baldwin, on the Flori
da Railroad, and Tallahassee, the capitol of ;
Florida. The service to commence as soon!
ns the coiytractors can put the stock upon the .
roiQgs. , ‘I
Heretofore the communication between
Charleston and Tallahassee has been by cir
cuitous and complicated routes through South-,
western Georgia, interrupted by frequent de
lays and failures. The new service makes
the communication direct, gain of two
days in time over tho old one. ’ It will place
Charleston in daily communication with the
most fertile and thickly settled portions of
the “ Land of Flowers,” as the section of
country permeated by this route and its im
mediate connections, contains at least .two
thirds of the population of the State.—

Accident.
■* As the train on the Savannah, Albany &,
Gnlf Railroad was approaching the Depot
yesterday afternoon, just a few minutes be
fore stopping, Doctor Mooney, of Bryan
county, a passenger, who was on the plat
form of the baggage car, accidentally fell,
either by slipping, or while in the act of stop-'”
ping on the platform of the passenger car.—
Fortunately be fell between the rails —two
cars passing, over and scarcely touching him.
We arc glad to learn that the only injury he
received was the severe mashing of his right
hand, just above tho wrist, rendering ampu
tation necessary. The operation was per
formed shortly after at the Marshall House,
by Doctors Sullivan, Byrd and . Bulloch.—

Fine Catawba Grapes.— Wo partook of,
some choice grapes yesterday, cultivated by ,
Mr. Alfred Baker, at his residence on the.
Sand Hills. These grapes were grown on;
comnibn sandy soil, and furnish additional
evidence of the suitableness of tho climate
for raising fine grapes for table use, as well
as for making wine. We hope that the
approaching winter will[ hot be allowed to
pass by aiiY person having a,piece of ground
K large enough to plant a Catawba grape vine
in, without having as many cutting and root-j
ed vines planted as possible. j
In several sections we notice the formation
of vine growing associations —cannot one be •
formed here Con.

In his address welcoming Mr. Uritte.nclen
to Lexington, Judge Robetfsou said that!
“0c endorsement of the Republican I'jfuty
entwined an evergr cm around your snow
white head.” Alluding to which tho Paris
F’lag very pertinently asks: “ What do’ the
honest voters of the South think of lan
guage liko this uttered in a ’ slave State 1
Hero for tho first time in our history we aro
told that a Southern Senator who wilfully
violated tho known wishes of his constituen*
cy, and cast the vote of this State, on the
side of the North and against tho South, in
a death struggle upon tho slavery question,
is to be wreathod with an evergreen for his
act of treason to his native State. If tho
Judge had told Mr. Crittendon that effort to
barter away tho interest of bis State and de
liver her bouud band and toot to her enemy
of the North, in order that he might thereby
.purchase a little personal popularity .on. tho.
other side of the Ohio river, would ever he
regarded by his countrymen as a black mark
upon tho once fair escutcheon of his fame,
he would have hit mnch nearer the truth.”
The Great. Fish Caught at Last.—
A correspondent from Middleton’s Store, Ap-
pling county, says : “ There was caught out
of the Okefenokee Swamp, about three miles
from the Bose Ponds, on the north-east
side, by Jas. T. Eason and Kinsey Mattox,
a Black Fish that weighed about one hun
dred pounds. It took both the above named
gentlemen to pull it out on shore. It was
between six and sevendeet in length and Dine
inches between the eyes. There was six
quarts of pure oil taken from it. It is ac
knowledged to be the largest fish that has
ever been taken out of thg run in this swamp.”
—Millcdgcvillt Recorder.
A Novel Business. —Straws have al
ways shown which way the wind blows, hut
they now have anew office, and point out
unmistakably tho way a vast quantify of
liquor flows. Witness tho following from a
Western paper:
Nearly all, if not all, the drinking saloons
in St. Louis, it is said, are furnished with
straws for sucking juleps by one man, who
sells them for one and a half or two dollars a
thousand , from two acres of land, on which
he grows rye annually, he sells about twen
ty-fouThundred dollars’ worth of straws. —
They aro packed also in barrels, containing
about twelve thousand straws, and shipped
to New Orleans, St. Paul, and the interme
diate places, and tho demand is increasing.
THE STABS.
It is the opinion of astronomers that thero
aro stars so infinitely remote as to bo situa
ted at tho distance of twelve millions of
millions of miles from onr earth; so tliat
light, whieli travels with the velocity of
twelve millions of milcsin a minute, would re
quire two millions of years for its transit from
those distant orbs to our own while
the astronomer who should record the
aspect of mutations of such a star would
be relating, not its history at the present
day, hut that which look place two millions
of years gono by. The nearest, a Centauii,
one of tho brightest stars in tho southern
hemisphere, it at twenty-one billions of miles
distance —that is, its light would require
three years and a quarter to reach us. Tho
second, 61 Cygni is not nearer than sixty
tlupo billions of miles off, and its light re
quires upwards of ten years to reach us.
TEXAS. •
G. W. Kendall writes to the New Orleans
Picayune that there will ho no want of corn
in western Texas, and that tho cron of Chi
nese sugar cane will be immense. He says :
“ Some of my neighbors are having it
ground, and are making bread of it, speak
ing of it in commendable terms, while eve
rywhere they are preparing to grind the
stalks and convert the jnico into syrnp or
molasses. That this is to be a valuable ad
djtion to our crops in this section there can
be no doubt—it stands a drouth better than
any other plant—is no more affected by dry
weather than a salamander by fire. Tbe \
grain makes a good article of bread —so
many say; tbo leaves make good fodder;
while the stalk can be converted into molas
ses, and perhaps sugar—nothing is lost.”
A Minister’s Walk and Conversation.
—Tho editor of tbe N. C. Presbyterian, who.
is at the VirginisPiSprings, has heard a good
story of speaker Orr and tho Rev. Dr. W.,
of Lexington. Not long since, the story
goes, they were both at the warm springs,
and met in a public room of a hotel. They
i hadd>een sitting with other company, and af-
I teiUTwhilo tho Doctor rose and walked across
i the roaiij .-with the usual limp ill his gait.—
Mr. Orr immediately recognized him, and
askod him if ho were not the Chaplain at tho
University of Virginia at such a time, na
ming tho year. The Doctor replied that he
was. “I was there,” said Mr. Orr, “a stu
dent, at the University, and I knew you by
your limp.” “Well,” said the Doctor, “it j
seems my limping made a deeper impression i
on you Jthan niy preaching.” The joke j
placed Mr. Orr in an awkward predicament,
and most men would have been nnablo to ,
extricate themselves, but he replied with ]
ready wit: “Ah, Doctor.it is the highest 1
compliment we can pay a minister to say he
is known by his walk rather than by his con
versation.’’ .
Broadest at the Ras^ —Young man,
one of the first things you ought ti consider
is how to huilcl up a character. Allow us to
tell you one fact about it, which wo have
learned from observation : It must be built like ;
a pyramid to be,firm and lasting—broad at:
the base. Then tho foundation must be;
good, or even a pyramid would crack and fall
to pieces. Get a reputation from early boy-
hood, for truth, honesty, industry, obedience
to parents and teachers, and above all, pie
ty. By and by yonr character will be as ’
firm as a pyramid ; a host of calumniators
could not overthrow it. But if youth and
early life is bad to build a character on, such
a beginning would bo almost as difficult as to
build and poise a pyramid on its apex.— ■IV. I
