Tnrn m Jefereon City, Mo. Examiner Jspt. 4.^
By the arrival of a young man named
Robert Brandon, wo have bcen.Jurmahed,
with the following information from Balt
Lake : t
” I (say* onr informant) left camp. Scott
on the 13th June. The Mormon excitement
has been entirely abated. Several Mormon
train* had passed camp Scott on their way
to the States.” .
They stated, while camped at the above
place, that they would not have been permit
ted to leave, or they would have
Salt Lake long ago. “v
On being questioned a* to their determin
ation to resist the entrance of the United
States troops, they replied that the major part
of the Morfbona only awaited the entrance
of .the troop* in order to effect this escape
from Brigham Young and Mormonism.
On their arrival at Camp Scott, they were
minus the common necessaries of life. Ou
being asked the cause of their destitute condi
tibnV flint'before Brigham Young
had relented from bis determination to resist
the troops, lie bad ordered them to deposit
what provisions they had in the store houses;
but as soon as he made known his intention’
of gding South, those of the Mormons who’
refused to go were deprived of all, and could
get nothing for their outfit.
They also stated that but for the interfer
ence of Governor Gumming, the destroying
angels wonhl have foiced them away, and
that they did succeed, iu some instances, in
driving away several women. I came down
with the two . Mormon trains from Camp
Spott, numbering about 300 persons, princi
pally. women, who were chiefly English, and
some Scotch; and the principal topic of their
conversation throughout was tho absurdity
of Mormonism and its principles. They
were all unanimous in their denunciations of
Brigham Young and Ins apostles, and talked
of his assassination by tbo Mormons who re
mained at Camp Scott as a sure event.—
They have all (without exception) become
disgusted with Mormonism and renounced it,
and expressed their determination from
henceforth to use all their efforts for the to
tal annihilation of Mormonism. They ex
press their desire to return to their native
countries, and would, if they had the means
to do so, in order that they might be instru
mental in saving others from the baneful in
fluence of Mormonism. On their arrival at
Plattsmouth, on the Missouri river, they had
calculated to cross over to Council
but the bad condition of the roads in lowa
changed their resolve, and they are now
dispersing themselves in Kansas and Ne
braska Territories. ~ ‘•’ *
Mr Brandon gave 11s many other interes
ing particulars, from which we conclude
that a speedy dissolution awaits the commu
nity of Latter Day Saints. Many of the wo
men, although they went to Utah innocent
and pure, we judge, arc very unlikely to lead
a very exemplary life in future. They have
been debased until they nrc likely to aban
don tliemselvcs-to tho loathsome life of pros
titution.
Correspondence of the Savannah News.
Ckntrkvii.i.aok, Sept. 9, 1858.
Mr. Edituk There was considerable
excitement at Traders’ Hill yesterday. You
doubtless recollect seeing an account in tiic
Georgian, in May last, of t lie horrid murder
of a man by tlie name of Henry Jones, by
two negroes, Peter and George, the proper
ty of l)r. C. E. Ballard. The negroes were
put in jail at WaTesboro at’ that time, but
made their escape after a few months’ con
finement. They were, however, taken up
shortly afterwards, and deposited at Traders’
Hillj where tliey both made their escape
again and were re captured on Saturday
last, and the citizens of the county, deeming
further expenses aud trouble unnecessary,
(the negroes having acknowledged their
guilt,) took the law in their <n\n hands, and
jfypointcd a committee to decide their fate.
They recommended to their fellow-citizens
the propriety of hanging them without fur
ther trial, staring the insecurity of the jail
and the expenses that would be incurred
should they wait until the next sitting of
the Superior Court. They* therefore, pro
cured the signatures of all who wore in fa
vor of such a step. All, or very nearly all,
of the citizens of the county came forward
and signed the said paper. They were march
ed out about a half mile distant from the hill,
where the gallows was erected, and executed
at one o’clock. The platform of the gallows
was constructed so as to attach a long rope
to it, in order that every man present might
have a “pull,” which they willingly did.

THE UTAH LEGISLATURE AND POLYGAMY.
Wm. J. Osborn, a “Gentile,” has been
elected to the Legislature of Utah Territory,
from Greene River 00., by 135 majority
over his Mormon opponent. It is thought he
will bo the only Gentile elected to the Le
gislature. He was the Democratic candidate,
and the meeting which nominated him unan
imously passed the following resolutions :
Resolved, That a union between church
and State, for political or any other purposes,
is dangerous ami subversive of republican in
stitutions.
Resolved, That we view the President’s
proclamation pardoning the Mormons for se
dition and treason as a magnanimous mea
sure, and calculated to effect a roost salutary
object. The return to their homes, as loyal
citizens, of this deluded people.
Rcstilved, That we look upon poligamy,
as practiced in this Territory, as a moral, so
cial and political evil, and entirely in oppo
sition to civil liberty and the institutions and
principles of this government.
Resolved, That*, we pledge onr candidate
for representative, Wm. J. Osborn, Esq., if
elected, to use all his efforts to have all laws
on the statute book at variance with the
principles herein declared repealed.
Greene Jliver county is th% only one in
the Territory where the Gentiles are believ
ed to be in the majority, and Mr.. Osborn is
the first Gentile elected to the Legislature
since the organization of the Territory.

Died,
In of Griffin, on Friday, the24th ult., Hon.
James Howard Mangiiam. Mr. Manuham
wasiyouug man, just entered upon life, and died at
the house of hi* father, Capt. John C. Maugham.— j
He was greatly esteemed in the city for hi* urbaue
manners, and amiable deportment. He was kind
and generous to a fault. He had been admitted to
the bar, and at the time of hi* death held the re
sponsible office of Ordinary of the couuty. We deep
ly sympathise with those to whom he was dear, who
are left to mourn his untimely death.
We have also to mourn the death of a much re
spected and highly valued female friend,Mrs. Fran
ces Gaui.ding, wife of Col. A. A. Gaulding, who
departed this life in the city of Griffin, on Monday,
the 27th ult. Mrs. G. was a lady of unbounded
goodness of heart, generous and charitable. The
hungry never left her dooriiinfed, nor the distressed
without sympathy and consolation. While the ci
tizens of Griffin generally will mourn her loss, the
poor will feel that they have lost a benefactor to
whom they never applied in vain.
At Columbus, on the 28th ult., Hon. Samuel A.
Wales. Mr. Wale* was an eminent member of
the bar, and has been a member of the Legislature
a number of times. He was an active and energet
ic man and was a justice of the Inferior Court at
the time of his death, which was in his sixtieth
year.
