LETTER EBOM THE COPPEB MINES.
Ducktown Copper Minks, 1
■ Aug. 20. 1858. t
Mr. Editor:—l arrived in this very in
teresting mining region yesterday, and found
its dozen copper unities in full blast—giving
employment to several thousand persons,
and direct and incidental support to more
women and children than probably any other
country of like extent on earth. Each mine
is a distinct community, with its school,
church, and all the collateral attachments of
a Well regulated mining establishment. Sev
eral have smelting furnaces, which reduce
the ore to a motte or regulus of from 50 to
70 per cent. This is crushed and packed in
boxes, and wagoned to the railroad,-thence
to Baltimore, New York, or Swansea, iu
Wales, where it is sold.
A good furnace will reduce 5000 pounds j
per day. -The most of the ore no worked
is obtained near the 1 surface, at from 50 to
100 feet, is termed by the miners “ black ox
ide,” but is rather a virtuous bisulpburet con
taining from 10 to 20 per cent —sometimes
from 30 to even 40 per cent of copper.—
The green cavbonato*is found in considera
ble quantity at two of the mines. The su
perincumbent part of the vein is a hydrated
oxide of iron, (limonite,) and at a greater
depth, varying from 150 to “375 feet, they
find beautiful specimens of the yellow snl
phuret, which will ultimately afford all tllej
workable ores. Most of the mines are con
ducted on the strictest principles of modern j
science—the rameFsTffie men of enlarged j
practical knowledge, obtained in the best
regulated mines in Europe. All the opera
tions have assumed a fixed character, and
steadily progress, till in a few more years it
will equal any section on the globe for its
immense mineral productions and enlighten
ed scientific system of developments and on
ward march.
It is now fur in advance of outward pub
lic opinion with regard to its progress in the
arts and its moral condition. In a popula
tion of some 0000, divided into over half a
dozen communities, I saw but one man in
toxicated in two days, which gpeaks highly
•of its inhabitants, .and clearly surpasses
many, if not all our older towns aud villa
ges.
At the Hiwassce mine, they have a Mason
ic Hall and a Piintiiijj ! ±Mfice ! The latter
receutly f estafclislicd, iinSer the ownership
and supervision of W. P. Collins, whose in
dustry and enterprise can’t tail of securing a.
* liberal patronage from a people who evince
do tnueii interest in the development of all
rflie resources of their country. M. S.
BRIDGE AT ALBANY. .
Among the very important improvements
long needed at Albany, was a bridge over
the Flint River. This, it appears, is about
to be Accomplished, as will be seen by the
following notice from the Albany Patriot of
the 23d ult:
Our enterprising fellow townsman, Col. N.
Tift, has just concluded a contract with Dr.
A. J. Robinson, of Columbus, for the erec
tion of a first class Bridge, to span F.lint Riv
er at the foot of Broad street in this city. —
Horaco King, the celebrated ‘Bridge builder,
will superintend the work. The covered lat
tice portion of the Bridge will be 350 feet
long, resting on three hollow wood piers, to
be subsequently filled with masonry, and
will be about 40 feet above high water. The
trestle bridging will be about üBO fopt long,
making a total length of 930 feet, jjlf no uu
forseen occurrence should prevent, the bridge
will be opened for crossing on the first of De
cember, and will be completed -“by the first
of February next.
SUICIDE.
We copy below, says the Pulaski Times
of she 23 ult., irom a letter written by a lady
to a relative in this place, and dated Ogle
thorpe, Sept. 19th, 1858, the following ex
tract !
“I learn from the Rev. Jno. P. Duncan,
who has been on a visit, to Stewart Camp
Meeting, that during a sermon, preached by
Rev. Mr. Reyuolds, oh Monday, I3UI inst., a
Dr. Thornton (who graduated in Philadel
phia, and was once wealthy, hut in his wild
career had squandered nil Ills property) aroSb
from .his seat, about midway the sermon,
went a few yards from the stand and shot
himself with a pistol—putting the weapon
just above his right ear ; the ball lodged just
above his left temple. At last accounts, on
Tuesday following, he >vas not dead, but his
attending physician says death is /inevita
ble.” ;
The fate of Dr. Thornton is another
warning to young men against the allure
ments aud temptations of vice.
THE PARAGUAY EXPEDITION.
“Washington, Oct. s.—lt is understood
that the Paraguay expedition will sail imme
diately. Preparations have been augment
ed, in consequence of official advices that
Lopez is determined to make serious
tanec. OurGovermnent will probably pur
sue a more’ uncompromising policy, The
iipedition will sail at the earliest possible
moment. *
It seems that the expedition is to do some
thing practieal besides the settlement df an
international dispute. The Washington cor
respondent in the Seffh York Tribune says ;
“ Measures are about being taken, through
the naval expedition to Paraguay, to intro
duce into the United States the mate, or
Paraguay tea; also a valuable medicinal ■
plant called nurd, believed to be a sure spe- j
cific against the bites of venomous insects or j
reptiles j and a peculiar kind of honey bee.
which builds 911 branches of trees, instead of’
■hives or trunks of trees, as with tbe common
bet.” . *-• - 1
I THE TALIOXAS MEETING.
It will be seen by the proceedings of the
meeting at Tallokas, in Lowndes county,
, that 001. Sfeward of.Thomasville—who knows
perfectly what was the understanding at the
stockholders’ meeting at Brunswick, in May i
I ’s7—is opposed to the pfoseut. location ofi
1 tlie Main Trunk, and that an effort is threat-!
cncd to obtain legislative redress unless; the;
Directors abandon the line now contefinplat
( ed, and adopt the Brunswick line. The pre
amble and resolutions adopted are eminently
mild and courteous, but pointed and forcible.
It is-hardly possible to give too much weight
to the fact that'the Main Trunk could not
j have been commenced, much less built, but
by an abandonment of the Brunswick Road,
by its South-western stockholders, and the
, subsequent execution of the release by that
Company. The stockholders, therefore, who
abandon their own and favorite project, in
order to opon a pathway for the Main Trunk.
■ fiavtnriglittr in regard ttritsriocntloil that'’ eafi
not be ignored disrepute. We hope,
| however, tjiat better counsel will yet prevail,
the false step taken by the Directors retra
ced, and that the matter will not get before
the Legislature. —Brunswick Herald.
