THE TELEGRAPH TO BATATA.
The Havant Prenta, of September 19, baa
a leader ou the .abject of the Submarine
Tulegrapb between Havab., Key West and
Macon, Ga. The company, it y. ™ or
gani*ed in Havana in 1857 ; in July of which
year 8800,000 capital wa. subscribed in
shares of 81,00(T. The line projected is to
be partly terrestrial and pertly submarine, be
tween Georgia and Key West, extended to
Havana, if the permission of the GoTirn
ment can be obtained—otherwise the SO or
90 miles of sea communication will be made
by steamers. The company was approved
by the Island government, and the charter
for the American end of the line was obtain
ed from the Legislatures of Georgia and
Florida. Application was then made to the
Spanish Court for permission to run the sub
marine cable, and as yet no answer has been
received from the Queen, although it is ex
pected that her C. M. will interpose no seri
ous objection. * -
The Prenta announces that all the esti
mates and surveys of the proposed line have
been that the soundings of the Gulf
between Key West and Havana were made
by vessels of the American navy, which
were generally tendered to the company for
that purpose by the American Government
without cost to’ the directors. The Prewsa
has seen the charts, and says that the Amer
ican route of this line will be, from Key
West to St. Marks. 425 milps of submarine
cablh, allowing ten per cent for stock ; from
St. Marks to Tallahassee 25 miles of wire
on poleri; from Tallahassee-to Albany, Ga.,
80 miles of do., and from Albany to Macon,
Ga., 100 miles of do.
At Macon the wire will connect with all
the other wires of the Union. The estima
ted cost of the submarine cable will be SSOO
<2)8600 per mile, and of the land wire 8200
‘SB3OO. From Key West to Havana will
be 90 miles of cable, including the allowance
of slabk. The cost of working the line is
estimated at 830,000 per annum, all includ-!
ed. The income oh a very moderate tariff,
and on a Calculation that only one hundred
messages will be. sent per day, when the line
will be capable of transmitting four hundred
—is estimated at fourteen per cent on the
capital. -
The Prenta learns that a New York steam
ship company have offered to lay the cable
gratis ; and, as the soundings were also made
gratis by the American naval vessels, the
Prenta thinks tha stockholders should be
much obliged to th authorities. The Cap
tain-General had sent the plans and surveys
to Spain by the Steamer Ter,- which sailed
from Havana on the 12th September, espe
cially for the purpose, and a . favorable an
swer from Madrid was expected.
We notice that Mr. Samuel 11. Kennedy,
the agent of this line, has lately visited Ma
con, Thomaßvville, rind other points, and ac
quired the right of way wherever he has
-been. He is, we learn, to be in Savannah
in a short time. — Savannah News.
THE SOOTHEBN JUDICIAL DISTRICT.
A writer in the last Thomasville Reporter,
suggests the 1 formation of anew Judicial
District to be composed of the counties of
Ktuanuel, Montgomery, Laurens, Pulaski,
Telfair, Coffee and Wilcox—adding to the
Southern District the county of Mitchell,
and if it is desired by her citizens, the coiin
tyof Decatur.
The existing ridiculously inconvenient di
mensions of the Southern District exacts
from our Judge an nmount of physical labor
ns oppressive as it is glaringly disproportion:
!e, and simple justice to the official as well
ns a due consideration of the convenience-of
citizens haying business in the courts, de
mand alike the remedial interposition of the
Legislature.
/ To w-hat extent the existing arrangements
in tliiscircuit have been adapted to the ac
commodation of lawyers resident ini Middle
Georgia, we are not fully, aware, but it is cer
tainly neither fair, right nor endurable that
any system should be continued which post
pones the sessions of Lowndes Superior
Court to the closing weeks of December and
June.— Southern Georgia Watchman.
LATEST FBOM THE SEMINOLES—TIGER TAIL
AND PARTY BEFUBE TO EMIGRATE.
We fake the following from the Key of
- tlic Gulf of the 9th instant.
Wo have been allowed the perusal of a
letter from Mr. Fletcher, dated Miami, Fla.,
Oct. Ist, and addressed to his son in this place,
from which we extract the following :
We had a visit, Sept. 19th and 20th,
from Tiger Tail’s party df Indians, fifteen in
number including himself—thirteen men and
- two boys. They are are all peaceable and
express a wish to continue so. Three of the
young Indians coifld read and write and cal
culate in dollars and cents. They are de
termined to remain in Florida; they have
plenty of monejr and say that all the money
in the United States would not bribe them
to leave here. They wish to Bottle them-’
selves down and live in peace, to he govern
ed by the laws and protected by the laws.”
We are informed that many are engaged
in clearing land about six miles from the res
idence of Mr. Fletcher. All tlie Indians are
now in the Eastern part of the .Everglades,
engaged in the cultivation of arrowroot.
IMPORTANT FBOM THE SOCIETY ISLANDS.
Annexation to the United States.—
We have important news from the Society
Islands, dated at Raiatea and Tabaa, on the
6th of June, and at Tahiti on the 12th of
July. The governors of the first named is
lands—who have the power of appointing or
dethroning the king—had, it appears, taken
the supreme power from Tamatoa, Va., son
ofQueen Pomare, of Tahiti, who was elect
ed chief magistrate about a year ago. The
ex-King then declared to return to the home
of bis mother, Pomare, and thin; the islands
were left without a ruler. In this emergen
cy the governors offered Consul Owen, of the
United States, to surrender the islands of
Tnhan and Raiatea to our government, and
handed him official letters to that effect for
transmission to Washington. This move
ment gave great offence to the representa
tives of England and France, who incited a
sort of revolution against the governors. In
this state of affairs the French war brig Hy*
drographe arrived af Raiatea, and her com
mander took Mr. Thomas Croft and Mr. Jor
dan, American citicens, into custody, and
conveyed them to Tahiti, on account of their
annexation proclivities.

will it allow of tonnage dues or a tax on the

that in pursuance of this resolution vessels of

right of New Granada to refuse this govern
