OPENING OP THE TEHUANTEPEC ROUTE.
The steamship Quaker City. Cudl. Shu
feldt, left this port on Saturday for New Or
leans, from whence she will hereafter run
regularly, making semi-monthly trips to.
Minatitlan, with the California mail. She
had about ninety passengers and more fretgttF
than she was able to carry. Thus, we have
evidence that the important enterprise of
opening anew highway between - the two
oceans is approaching a completion, and that
the formidable obstacles whicli have present
ed themselves, during the progress of the
work, have at length been successfully
come. The awarding of a mail contract to
this rotue, by the United States government,
no doubt operated as a substantial encour
agement, and led to a more speedy opening
than would otherwise have taken place. In
cluding 180 men who left this port about
the Ist of August, in the bark Rapid, there
are now employed on the road between
Suchil and Veutossa about 400 men j and
thirty first-class coaches are already on the
ground or at route, to be employed in carry
ing passengers to the opposite ocean. There
are also three steamers which will be availa
blc,for navigating the Coatzacoalcos river,
between Minatilan and Suchil, a distance of;
70,miles. Still, before all the contemplated
improvements shall have been made, a large |
expenditure will bo necessary. This will
be especially true, so far as relates to tho
proposed railroad, ll'O miles iu length, de
signed to supersede the carriage road, the
estimated cost of this structure being $5,-
000,000.
One of the river steamers, the Suchil,
which sailed from New York a few days ago,
is a remarkably fine one, being built of iron,
with thick bulkheads exdending lengthwise
and across, and fitted up with every requisite
for safety and convenience.
It is anticipated that passengers will go ■
from New York to New Orleans in four I
days; from the latter port to Suchil, the
head of navigation, in an equal length of!
time; while two days will, be required for
the carriage road. On reaching the Pacific!
terminus, the steamer OrcgdYi will be in read
iness to go up the coast, occupying ten days
in the passage to San Francisco. The time j
occupied between New Orleans and San !
Francisco, it is said, will not exceed fifteen
or sixteen days, at farthest.
This route is opened by the Louisiana Te- i
huantepec Company, which Emile Sere
of New Orleans, is President, and Hargous i
Brothers, of this city, agents. Mr. Slidell is
chief engineer. Every additional facility !
which is afforded for rapid communication
between remote parts of the country, con-!
tributes to the prosperty of the whole, and
is a fit subject for congratulation. Wc see
no reason why the Tehuantepec route may
not at length be regarded as a fixed fact.— j
Jour, of CSm.
Swrrt Potato Vines as llay.—lt is
remarkable that planters will allow their
potato vines to be killed by the frost, to the
serious injury of tho root, and total loss of
the vines, previous to gathering; and yet j
they will spend time in saving pen vines that
are done growiug and partially dry, and fud
det (com blades) after the corn is matured, !
when neither or both of them are worth as
much as the potato vino for stock food;- by
twenty-five per cent. On the 20th of this j
month, and earlier, in proportion as you go
Northward in tho cotton region, the potato
vine is in a state of luxuriant growth, hav
ing shed none of its leaves, full of sacharine
matter and starch. They may bo gathered |
with great rapidity, and easily cured, as there
is rarely rain about tho 20th of October. —
There is no loliagc in tho class of hays, for!
stock cattle and mules, to bo compared to i
well cured sweet potato vines.— Planter iJy
Soil, Oct.
A\ Irish Repartee. —Tho Irish mind
is u never-failing source of wit. The follow
ing is the latest specimen .-
Patrick is baggage THaster on tho
Georgia Railroad and always—attentive to
his busiuess. A lew evenings since, while at
liis post, he was accosted by an excited pas-1
senger, who, in a rude and boisterous man- j
ner, demanded repeatedly to know the where-,
abouts of his trunk. Pat, after several times \
replying lo ftio interrogatory, at length
lost his patience, and thus put an end to the
stranger’s troublesome questioning: “Oeli,
misthcr, I wish in my soul you were the El-1
ephant instead of a Jackass, for thin you’d
have your thrunk always under ycr eye.”—
Atlanta Intelligencer.
SLOSH|NG ABOUT.
The Judges often tell stories on the mem- \
hers of the bar, albeit they are much oftencr
the subjects of stories themselves. WeTlttc
ly heard one. of the former illustrating the
propriety of “ letting well enough, “"‘ by the
following enecdote:
An affray case was on trial in the Circuit
Court of Pike county, in which some six or j
eight peace breakers wore represented by
almost as many, lawyers, each of whom, in
turn, pqt the only witness for tho State
through the fortunes of a tpdious cross
animation. Nat , a well known Mont
gomery practitioner, was counsel for a big
black fellow in the crowd, who answered to
tho name of Saltonstall. As to this defend
ant, the only proof which was elicited on tho j
examination in chief'of the witness fori the
prosecution, was that, to use the peculiar,
phraseology of the narrator —while the rest
on ’em was a cussiu’rand elinchin’ aud pair-1
ing-off for a regular r’ynl, Saltonilatl, jest
kept Jos It in’ about.” This expression was
repeated half a dozen times— Saltonstall
kept sloshin’ about. The Solicitor and Nat [
both construed this to mean that Saltonstall j
was only moving about, drunk, among the j
combatants, and the former did not press for
an explanation. Presently, however, it came
to Nat’s turn to cross examine for his client;
and as he had received quite a handsome fee j
for considering how things stood, he felt;
bound to make something of a “demonstra-i
tion.” So quoth lie, with tho air of tho!
avenger of iivjured innocence:
Come, witness, say over again what it j
was that Mr. Saltonstall had to do with this
affair!”
“ Saltonstnlll Why I’vo told you sever
al times, the rest on ’em clijiched and paired
off, but Saltonstall jist kept sloshin’ about.
“Ah, my good fellow,” exclaimed Nat,
quite testily, “ we want to know what that
is. It* isn’t exactly legal evidence in the
shape.you put it. Tell us what you mean
sloshin’ about.”
“Well,” answered the witness very delib
erately, “ I’ll try. You see John. Brewer
and Sykes they clinched and font- That’s
in a legal form, ain’t it ?
“Oh yes !” said Nat—“ go on!”
“ Abney and Blackman then pitched into
*+orre-nnotber, and Blackman bit off a piece of
i Abney’s lip—that’s legal, too, ain’t it!”
> “Proceed!”
> “ Simpson and Bill ‘ Stones and Murray
; was altogether on the ground, a bitin’, a
I gougin’aud kickin’one another—that’alegal,
* too, is it!”
“ Very!—but go on !”
“ And Saltonstall made it his business to
walk backwards and forwards, through the
crowd, with a big stick in his hand and
knock down every loose man in the crowd
as fast as he come to ’em ! That’s what I
call sloshin’ about /”
Nat is of opinion, now, that unless a pri
ma facie case is made out by prosecution, on
the direct examination of their witnesses, it
is quite as well for the defendant to waive
his right to cross examiue.— Montgomery

to PLANTERS!
lAM aw are that in presenting my I’LANTEB to
thopublic, 1 have to contend with the prejudices
created by the failure of other inventions for the like
purpose. I flatter myself, howevA, that my PLAN
TER will perforin the work proposed, in a sutisfae
i torv manner. lain strengthened in that conrietion,
| by the epjnioU-of nearly all the PRACTICAL lAU
MKRH of Thomas and adjoining counties who have
examined it; and the judgment of the member* of
the Patent Office, w ho pronounce it to he by far the
best PLANTER that ha* ever been presented to
them.
It is intended to plant Corn nnd Cotton, and to
sow grain of all hinds. Far sowing Wheat broad
east ami harrowing in nt the same time, it cannot he
equalled. It MU be used for putting out Guiana,
either by strew ing or by putting any desired quanti
ty nt nay given distance. The distance proposed to
drop the seed is graduated by tiie number of cogs
and the-quantity by the size.
A glance at the PLANTER show* the amount of la*,
bur saved by it* use, and the uature and accuracy f
the same. A man nnd horse lav* out the row, drops
the seed and cover* it, in thr same time and with
the same labor that it takes, in the usual way, to
lay out the row. The aid given by the w heel reu.
dera itcqaatlya* easy to the horse ns a single plough.
It being impossible for ANY ONE MAN to- bring
it to the notice of every farmer, or to supply the de
mand when exhibited, I propose to sell the right -to
any State or county, or notuber of enuhties. that
j any one may desire, and at rate* that the purchaser
j will mnkq money. I trust no one will ooudemu i {
without nil examination, because it is the invention
lof a Southern man. If, however, after examina
] tie.n, they reject it, I have nothing to *y.
