Fruui the Se*thern Recorder Thomasvillh, Occ. 4th, 1858. Messrs. Editors:—lnn* ,,,c l , * the Legu latare has deemed it p*oj ,er to-secure to *t|e tStiite by purchase, general “ Law Hooka’’ wLicit are valuable, 7° allow n brpf notice in your paper, of the look mo6t nett ed in the State. Col. E. H. Platt, of Troopville, George, is preparing a a r,,l ' t that wilt be to the pubjc generally, and the legal fraternity particubr ly, almost invaluable. Col. P„ with a syt tematic arrangement, collate s the decisions f, our Supreme Court, from theJst to the 251i ‘itjtfi., inclusive -+-rcmilcn.mg into tiro voluniis tire elaborate decisions of twenty-fire. Tie work is not a substitute for the Supreme Court decisions, but an abridgment of the same—nor is it an “ Index,” but rather an 1 epitome with references to the decisions so’ epitomized. “Whilst a work of such mentis"! greatly needed, especially by the legal fra- j ternity, and is attended in its publication i with heavy pecuniary liabilities, still its au- : thor asks no “ appropriation ” from the State j to secure tire success of the enterprise, but will, at a heavy expense, complete his work, and then submit ‘it to the rigid scrutiny of his professional brethren, and checi fully abide their decision as to its merit or demerit. In this arduous undertaking of rite author, w,e wish him an abundant success, such ns would be commensurate only with his inde fatigable zeal and untiring energy. Thomas. BRIDGE AT ALBANY. We are authorized to state that the bridge at this place will be open for crossing in the cornse of the next week, possibly by Mon-’ day next, if the weather should prove favor ; able to the builders, certainty before the en< of the week. The western land bridge is completed, the] lattice bridge, in two spans, one hundred ant fifty feet each, and forty feet above tbo wa ter, is erected, and tbo eastern laud bridg* alone remains to be raised and floored. - The bridge will be an ornament as ‘ wel as a benefit to the town and country. ‘lts cost, when completed, with all its ‘appurte nances, including stone piers,, right of way and privileges, will be about thirty thousand dollars. ’ Horacei_King, the master builder, do-; serves much credit for the energetic and faith ful manner in which liq has prosecuted this] Work. * Wo learn'that \hs lolls for crossing tire bridge will be the Same rate which was agreed upon by the Inferior Court, and now charged at the Albany ferry. This we Feel assured will be satisfactory to the public, and’ we trust may be remunerative to the proprie tor.— Albany Patriot, Dec. 2. DISTEESSING ACCIDENT NEAR JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. . Wo Warn that while a pwty of young ladies were on a visit to Holiday's Steam saw mill, near Jacksonville, a few days since, three ot them—Misses Jane Dupont, Kate Ferris, and Marfa'Dngget—were severally injured, to-wit: Miss Hogget’s dress coming in con tact with the machinery, she was drawn to wards the woiks before they could be stopped, and had her back and spine seriously hurt In trying to extrieafe her from, her perilous situation, Miss Dupont had her arm broken, and Miss Ferris received several revere bruises.— Sac. Hi publican. A later communication to *he Republican, says: “ Allow me to correct an error in said no tice. Miss Matin Hogget |ost her right arm just above her-ell ow, Miss Jane Dupont was injured in the, spine, and Miss Kate Ferris received flesh wounds on her side. Miss Hogget, after an amputation of her arm, is j doing as well as can be. expected under the circumstances. The accident occurred at the shaft of the mill, not near the saws. Captain Hnlfiday’s presence of mind doubtless saved the lives of the three ladies. HOLDING ON TO THE POLL TAX. On Tuesday, the bill introduced by Mr. Davis, of Marion, to abolish the poll tax and tlie tax on .professions, was injected in the House of Representatives without a division. llct order. THE GOVERNOR'S LEVEE. We omitted in our last issue, that the reception given by Gov. Brown to a vast , crowd of guests on Wednesday evening was quite the event of the season. Some half dozen large rooms in the .Executive Mansion were thrown open, and all were filled. The lights shone 1 rrlliantly, and so did the ladies. Occasionally the lovers of music had a song at the piano. Suclra press of human beings ! Gentlemen chatted in groups to themselves, i then promenaded with the ladies, or at least ( forced their way, to carry out the idea of walking for amusement. Members of the Legislature*were out in all their plenitude ; in fact, everybody seemed to be there, all squeezed, and all returning the compliment. The supper was magnificent. Such piles of good things, loading the several tables, rarely meet the eye. And then, to see with what unanimity these good tilings wry'e ap preciaterTby the guests, was enough to con vince any mere spectator that the feast was popular. The utmost good order and kind feeling ruled, until, at a proper hour “ the banquet halls ’’ were deserted. —Sbuthefri lleror dvr. (Ettttbibatca. lr&~We are requested to announce the name of E. C.
