We are safe in saving that there isn’t 50

this? Every man must pray his poll tax,
yet the money slides away and everybody
seems ignorant of its departure. There
is o;p thing absolutely wrong in the

One of the most troublesome things in
this world is the human tounge. It is
true that people not only talk about what
they should n©t, but there is too much
talk. I was taught that it is impolite to
speak out and interrupt another person
while that person is speaking, and I ex
pect it was once a rule of society for one
person to speak at a time. It would be
much more pleasant if we could have
such a rule now. How often do we see
a crowd of ten or twelve, all talking at
once.

I was.-oneo intimately acquainted with
a man who professed to be a skeptic. On
one occasion after a long private talk

you hear a man say that he does not be

Last night Representative Bleicher, of
Texas, died in this city, haing the fourth
member of tbe House since it met in De
cember. Mr. 8. had many agreeable
personal qualities, and, unlike the mem
bers whose deaths preceded his, had been
elected, to the doth Congress. He acted
generally with the Democrats, on politi
cal questions, but led those who dissent-

The Yellow iW- noVv ' :
at Ncv, Orleans, will report to Congress
at this session and "probably at an caily
tiay us conclusions as, to the cause and
treatment of the disease. Some of its
members have examined and commended
a plan of Prof. Gowgee, of London, now
here, to “freeze out” the disease. The
Professor proposes to board any vessel
coming from a dangerous port, and in a
few minutes, while the clothing of the
passengers is being disinfected, to reduce
the temperature of the vessel so much as
to destroy any germs of the disease. He
will operate in the same way on a dwel
ling house. Anything which promises
protection from the fearful pestilence is
worthy of trial, and-this plan seems to
have made friend* enough already among
scientific men to show that it has merit.
After two days of somewhat stormy
discussion, the woman suffrage conven
tion adjourned last night. Many of the
principal members will remain here sev
eral days to use their influence
upon Congress for the furtherance of the
cause. Don.

If you have friends who have emigra
ted to Texas, they would esteem it a
great favor if you would send them a
paper from their old country containing
all the local news for each week. Such a
paper can be obtained at inis office for
$1.50 a year, postage paid. It would
cost y r cu at least three dollars a y T ear to
write them a letter every week, not
counting your time and trouble anything,
and the Gazette gives mere interesting
local news in one issue than you would
probably think of in a year. Bend the
G azette to your friend in i exas and

The following lines are the result of
close observation, for we are sony to be
lieve that tbe use of spirituous liquors as
a beverage is steadily on tlie increase.
And believing, as we do, it arouses in us

Ministers, teachers, fathers and mothers,
let ua make one united effort to quell the
storm of dissipation, and put our feet ou
the neck of the monster Intemperance.
Young men, we wage war against the
drinking customs of society, and appeal
to you to give up the intoxicating bever
age, for ’tis useless. Young men, for J
your good we write—-for your good we
make the appeal to our friends to help
ns. Shall we suffer this monster evil to

hat fall from Calvary itself, or shall we,
:and in hand, join in the death grapple
/ith the hydra ? The destiny of mil
ions hangs upon our answer.
The determination ef this question do
nands great plainness of speech, as well
is earnestness in action. We must learn
ro speak out on this subject. For the
ness that is silent on this topic deserves
i place in the cellars of Herculeneum. In
this warfare for humanity we have need
of patience. God didn’t make the world
in one day, neither will it be reformed in
a day, but we are compassed about with
evidence of good resisting from the ef
forts of men and women this great
work, and humanity beckons us on. \Ye
tread upon the dust of heroes as we ad-

mid-air before us leads us to the conflict.
